WoWS: Interview with Lesta’s Ship Design representative

Translated by Umbaretz.

Tell us about yourself:

I work in Lesta on designing large surface artillery ships (cruisers and battleships).
Graduated from Leningrad Shipbuilding Institute with a degree in shipbuilding. I.e. was taught to create both civil and military ships. For two years worked in ship repair, serviced nuclear submarines.
I like everything in my current work – from digging in arhcives to the process of recreating a ship which design sometimes have only a few lines in documentation.
I was interested in ships for a long time, from second grade in school, when I read “Book of future admirals”, also my parents were subscribed to “Modelist Constructor” magazine and it had a “Cruiser” series. For the “Battleship” series I had to dig in various libraries.

When did you begin working in Lesta? How was your team assembled? Have you worked in IT beforehand?

I have been working with Lesta for a very long time, ever since “Pacific Storm”, where I was involved in testing on outsource. Later, I was deeper involved in “Pacific Storm: Allies”, where I advised on the hit-location system, the one responsible for the inner modules workings of the ship: armor, compartments, battle stations. Also, initially did the same when WoWs begun, but there I was already making objects inside the ship myself in 3D editor and made descriptions for them. Have been working in IT since 1996.

How do you begin designing paperships, where do you start?

“Paper ship” usually either descriptive part – tactical and techincal elements or graphical part – usually nominal one, too simplified to make detailed 3D models based only on it. For that reason we take materials found as a basis and begin the preliminary design process for the ship. As a result we get theoretical blueprints for ship’s hull, plans for bridges, decks, superstructures, ship projections, armor sheme, internal module layout – powerplant, ammo storages for various weapon systems, steering system.

WoWS Super League – Modified Mission Conditions

Info from Kandly, WG Community Coordinator:

As many of you know, we introduced an additional reward for Super League in Ranked Battles Season 6. According to the original idea, any player who reaches Rank 1 would gain access to a special mission. This mission would provide him with one Container for each battle played in the Super League. The intention of this move was to provide a nice reward to those brave souls who have fought their way to the top.

Unfortunately, we have observed a surge of unsportsmanlike conduct in the Super League. Many players decide to leave the battle after loading to get a container immediately without any actual contribution to the match. This situation clearly contradicts the whole idea of Super League missions and prevents conscious players from having fun.

In light of this behavior (and its scale), we decided to take action and change the conditions of these missions. With new rules, a Container will be rewarded only to top-2 players by XP earned in each team. This change will make unsportsmanlike conduct meaningless and protect well-doing players. We also offer an apology to fair players and hope that, when the change takes effect, their experience will be much more pleasant.

We kindly remind you that any conduct that disrupts gaming experience can be treated as violation of Game Rules. We reserve the right to investigate Super League participants battle logs and apply restrictions to their accounts if necessary.

We are constantly monitoring the situation and plan to react accordingly based on the results of this change.

Let’s support fair play and fun, especially in the honorable group of Super League participants!

Clarification by Tuccy, WG Staff:

Just to clarify few things:

  • This change is global, as the abuse was quite widespread.  That is also why the solution may appear a bit hasty – it is basically an emergency brake. It may or may not change in the future, but before we would set out to make a better system we simply needed to pull the lever to stop the current one.
  • The basic foundation of Super League was aiming at all of you who called for a skill based gameplay and to let Rank 1 players play against each other (and may I remind that before Super League was introduced, the frequent feedback was accompanied by “even without special rewards” ;)). Unfortunately the system was not designed with abuse in mind and it would seem that the much maligned random containers are indeed a strong motivator not only to play, but also to abuse system.
  • This is also main difference to leaving battle in normal Random / Ranked – if you end with 0, 0, 0 or even low score, you get no reward – here you would. Yes, it was a flaw int he system and, again, to plug it we needed to slam the brakes hard.
  • As for possible sanctions on players found in breach of game rules – as a general rule we do not discuss disciplinary actions on forums, so do not expect any lists, ban announcements, naming and shaming etc.

Hope this helps to explain the background of this decision a bit.

WoWS: TAP Insider News (20-II-2017)

I had a talk with a guy who claimed that he is working for Kongzhong. It is likely that the tier 10 Chinese line… eh I mean Pan-Asia (Because China-Taiwan relationship) will be Luda (some kind of copycat from Soviet Neustrashimy-class)… This explained why Lesta is using another Neustrashimy design in the video, to avoid making duplicated ships. Nothing is set in stone, so I am not sure either. Especially since the info is from KZ. They had occasions when they were wrong in the past.

WoWS: Public Test 0.6.2

The Public Test will be running from 21 February at 17:30 CET until 28 March at 14:00 CEST (UTC+2). Keep in mind that this is a testing environment, and unannounced maintenance and patch deployments can happen at any time during the Public Test phase.

What to expect in Public Test 0.6.2?

NOTE: Because the version update is still being tested, the information in this bulletin is tentative and reflects the state of development at the time of publication. Some changes and innovations may be absent or implemented in a different way by the time the final version of this update goes live.

Let’s start with the two new maps we added to the game. The first one is named “Ring”. It is available at battle tiers IV–VI. This map features a group of small tropical islands that visually resemble Hawaii, scattered somewhere in the Pacific. These islands are located at the frontier between Allied Forces and the Imperial Japanese Navy. The map’s key element is a ring-like group of islands in the centre. These islands can provide reliable cover… or become a deadly trap. Holding the “ring” is an important strategic task, because having control of this area will let your team have an advantage over the opposing team. If the opposing team manages to be the first to take control of this area, a concentrated attack will help you to quickly take control. However, note that losing control of the islands makes your team vulnerable to torpedo attacks from the centre of the map. Otherwise, this map has enough open space to allow for firing at long range.

The second new map in this update is “Haven”, available at battle tiers VII–X. Battles in this location will take place in an archipelago of small uninhabited islands somewhere in the Atlantic Ocean. These islands are located on the fringe of the British Empire. They were formed under the influence of constant ocean winds, which manifested in the natural landscape of this location, barren but beautiful in its own way. From a gameplay point of view, this map is all about co-ordinated teamwork. The key areas are hard to capture, but numerous areas of cover provide new opportunities for winning. With sudden engagements and frequent close range encounters, players will have to elaborate on their tactics. This map presents a special challenge to Battleship players, who will have to try and find advantageous positions for effective firing.

In version 0.6.2, we made various improvements to the game interface. The most noticeable enhancement – that will also be useful for your battle performance – is the option to display ship names on the Minimap. This option can be enabled in the Minimap settings. Note that it will be working only when the alternative battle interface mode is enabled. Moreover, those of you who like to listen to your favourite music during battles will definitely like another new feature: switching between user music tracks with the use of the following key combinations: (by default) [Ctrl] + [F] — next track; [Ctrl] + [D] — previous track.

Yet one more pleasant piece of news: we improved the game logic. Now, for the whole time the Damage Control Party consumable is active, it will assuredly prevent new fires and flooding, and save modules from being incapacitated. No more of that frustrating “damage at the last moment” which many of you have surely experienced before! This will give you more confidence in those tense gameplay situations where just a couple hundred HP and one extra second can determine the outcome of an encounter with the enemy.

Last but not least, in version 0.6.2 we are going to release the alternate branch of Soviet destroyers which we announced earlier. The ships have passed all the required tests and will most likely become available right after the update goes live on the game server. We are not planning to test them during the Public Test.
