The T-54D tank project became part of the German program to modernize foreign T-54 (T-55). With a slight increase in mass, the vehicle received protective blocks that significantly enhanced anti-cumulative protection and also improved protection against kinetic projectiles. It was optionally proposed to replace the 100 mm D-10T gun with a more modern one – L7A3 of 105 mm caliber. The British gun was superior to the Soviet one in both armor penetration and accuracy. At the request of customers, MG 3 machine guns were installed on the tank, and outdated communications equipment, surveillance devices and sighting devices were modernized. The project remained on paper.
