WoT – Q&A 30.08.2017

Some more answers from the devs.

  • Work on the Grand Battle mode was long, the main problem being the optimalization
  • There’s a possibility Grand Battles will be enabled for tiers lower than X
  • In time, more Grand Battle exclusive maps will appear
  • Nebelburg will also be HDified
  • There’s the will to remove ‘unplayable’ guns from tanks
  • New CN prems soon
  • There are a few ideas on how to rebalance the KV-5
  • There will be new visual Havok elements in the HD maps, but don’t expect crumbling buildings
  • Track tracks (lol) won’t be one texture now, instead, they’ll be generated dynamically depending on the speed and angle
  • The vegetation will react to gunfire
  • Maps won’t be visually cut off after the red line. The fog will be removed and the horizon expanded to increase the realism
  • Map borders will be masked with an invisible wall or some other elements
  • Devs have the possibility of making night maps, but don’t see the sense of it
  • After the release of HD maps, the BigWorld engine will be officially retired. Ready maps – Mountain Pass, Redshire, Himmelsdorf, Abbey, Mines, Prokhorovka, Malinovka, Murovanka, and Cliff
  • It’s quite possible that a special ‘Ultra’ client may appear, with 8K textures, and with a whopping size of 100 GB
  • Devs tried not to toy around with the gameplay when making HD maps
  • The main task now is to optimize the graphics for medium and low range computers
  • The music for the new maps will be re-recorded, and it will react to the gameplay
  • This Fall, the HD map Sandbox will be opened up
  • With the appearance of the new mod system, cheats will disappear, since running the client with unauthorized mods will be impossible

  1. “With the appearance of the new mod system, cheats will disappear, since running the client with unauthorized mods will be impossible”

WG must be new to modding and cheating, because this is obviously BS ;)
But at least it should make it harder and more risky for cheaters.

You mean the thing they started doing between 9.0 and 9.2 then completely scrapped for no reason even though they technicaly already have the HQ textures for all HD tanks since they use them for renders ? Yeah don’t count on it.

Some mods like Tundra do not require changing the game files. Idk how it works exactly but basicaly it’s an external program you can start anytime during gameplay to disable foliage. So unless the new mod system also reacts to dynamic changes like that and doesnt just check files before starting, I doubt it’ll end cheating.

No, those weren’t 8K, but “only” 2K. (and didn’t make such difference compared to 512 textures in use). I imagine four times higher resolution should provide some advantages already (though I won’t DL it, that thing will need serious RAM and CPU to process it on the fly, I think).

    2. Tundra sounds like an “injector” style modifier, which I thought WG was supposed to be taking care of already. Am I wrong?

    1. Oh look, a “night” battle that’s nothing like night (just some silly filter and few lights around) and on a console that will pmuch never face problems with sunlight on screen (unlike laptops – that make lot of devices played on and which have big issues with displaying dark scenes because of their display technology).

We already had a map close to this (Ruinberg on Fire, remember that dusk map?) and the feedback from the players was awful regarding the darkness and shadows, in terms of “Can’t see shit, cap’n”.

    1. Remember: “The bigworld engine has been modified so much that it’s basically a new game engine” means they dumped a lot of money into buying the company, revamping the outdated game engine, and are now finally realizing that it’s outdated.

  4. And once again they avoided the KV-5 Topic with the same vague sentence as always.

I think the Problem with the KV-5 is that it was a Jack of all Trades. DPM for trading (if you can pen). Armor to bounce a lot of incoming fire, good for stalling or breakthroughs (if you made them miss your weakspots). Speed to reposition (40kmh topspeed) effectively similar to the IS-3.

This made for a farely unique, fun and rewarding gameplay. I had so many good times playing this tank. But that was (mostly) years ago. Why this? Well, three years ago both the average armor and the average pen on tier 8 (especially for the heavies) was substantially lower: Tanks like the VK 100.01 P or the O-Ho (and all the Cashgrab Premium P2W Bullshit) didn’t exist. Many tanks still had their SD models, which had in many cases lower frontal armor (eg, T32, T34 hull, Tiger 2 and JT88 LFP, etc.). So low indeed you could reliably pen them with the standard 167mm pen AP. Then they started buffing every tank for no reason and even later they started to add new tanks (mostly premiums) with high pen guns. And suddenly your 185mm effective turret armor feels really bad against the new 220mm+ pen guns like on the Defender, Patriot, Skorpion G, Strv S1, Liberté, VK 100.01P or Lorr 40t many of which not only had better armor and pen but also mobility and viewrange.

So if WG wanted to restore the old reckless and fun KV-5 gameplay from 2014 they have to buff two things:
    1. Frontal Turret Armor from 180mm raw thickness to 230mm. Cheaks from 180mm to 200mm. This will mean that lower and equal tier opponents actually have to aim for the supposed weakspots again. (Leave the miniturrets as they are now, they give lower tier tanks a fighting chance against the tank)
    2. Gun Penetration for AP from the abysmal 167mm to 198mm (T32 level) so it will be able to pen the areas on tanks it was able to pen 3 years ago. APCR pen from 219mm to 235mm so it actually is better than the standard ammo on most of it’s counterparts but still requires some aim.

Saying this as a guy who played over 2.5k games in the KV-5 over the last 4 years (and had tons of fun in it).

    TLDR: Buff Armor and Pen.

    1. A demo with a single tank driving around = “Successfully demonstrated”?
There’re going to be 29 other tanks in the same battle and people should be able to run it on their mid-budget computers aswell in order for it to be considered “successfull”. It’s not the technology that failed, it was the optimization.
