The Yellow River shimmered with gold from a massive school of carp. They fought against the current, swimming ever farther upstream until they reached a raging waterfall—too high to be conquered. Many turned back, while others tried to leap over it but failed, swept downstream under the watchful eyes of the heavenly spirits.
Yet one fish managed to overcome the forces of nature. It dove deep, gathered all its strength, and soared upward, clearing the waterfall. As a reward for its perseverance, the heavens transformed it into a dragon.
