Tank v Tank: Chieftain v T-62

We are excited to announce that World of Tanks is proudly sponsoring and assisting in the production of an exciting series in collaboration with The Tank Museum. This episode marks the beginning of our partnership, and we look forward to sharing more episodes in the future!

In the first sponsored episode of Tank v Tank, you will join Paul Famojuro, a Content Creator at The Tank Museum, as we delve into the historic face-off between two iconic Cold War tanks: the Chieftain and the T-62. These formidable machines were designed to battle each other during a potential NATO versus Warsaw Pact conflict in Europe. Instead, they found themselves confronting each other in the turbulent battlegrounds of the Middle East.

The Chieftain

The Chieftain was the backbone of the British Army for over 30 years, renowned for its heavy armor. Despite its reputation for reliability issues in earlier versions, by 1981, the Chieftain had become a formidable war machine. Its L11 gun, with a muzzle velocity of 1,370 m/sec, could penetrate 355 mm vertical armor at 1,000 m.

  • Armor Thickness: Up to 280 mm
  • Main Gun: 120 mm L11 rifled gun
  • Maximum Speed: 25 mph

In-game, we have multiple Chieftains. One popular option is the IXFV4201 Chieftain Proto

On the opposing side, we have the T-62, a Soviet tank designed with a focus on mobility and mass production. Lighter than the Chieftain, the T-62 offered a nimble and reliable platform for battlefield operations. The T-62 weighed 37 tons, and its ammunition, with a muzzle velocity of 1,600m/sec, could penetrate 228 mm vertical armor at 1,000m.

  • Armor Thickness: 230 mm
  • Main Gun: 115 mm smoothbore gun
  • Maximum Speed: 31 mph

In-game, you can find the XT-62A

T-62AThe Iran-Iraq War saw a significant clash between Chieftain and T-62 tanks. This battle provides valuable insights into tank warfare and the tactical decision-making that goes into it. Despite their differences in design and capabilities, real-world combat scenarios often reveal unexpected challenges and outcomes. We invite you to join us on this journey as we dive into how different tanks compare to each other.

  1. There’s no Chieftain in the British techtree – they’re all premiums – despite much demand to add a Chieftain branch, or even to add the Mk.6 as Tier 10 instead of the Super Mongqueror abomination.

T-62A in-game is semi-hidden in a secondary tab in the garage, despite being one of the few real Tier 10 tanks in the game.

Nice joke WG, you really should be “excited” and “proud” about this…

    1. In their text nothing is written about techtree, the phrase used is “in-game”, which is correct, even if you don’t like it.

What should have been mentioned is that the T-62A was a “backup” to the normal T-62 in case of the 115mm smoothbore not working as intended. But it did, so the T-62A was never mass-produced and ended up being a prototype.
