WoT 9.22 CT: Ghost Object 257 armor

I have noticed something interesting while checking out the new Russian vehicles in tanks.gg:

Noticed anything? Better shots:

It appears that the Russian tier IX heavy tank, the Object 257 possesses ghost spaced armor. Secret new soviet technology perhaps? Tell us what you think in the comments below.

    1. youtubers were complaining about the V-shaped hull. None of them talked about the fact that the armor model has huge pieces of spaced armor around said hull that have no equivalent in the visual model.

        1. SirFoch is one youtuber in a sea of them. I don’t watch every WoT youtuber, and Foch is irrelevant considering the only thing he knows how to do is swearing and saying “this is shit” regardless of what he is reviewing.

  1. This ghost spaced armor doesn’t matter since there is no actual armor behind the roadwheels anyway. The design itself is absolutely broken because of how dealing damage work in WoT.

    1. doesn’t matter? wait a minute, am I the only noticing what’s behind the ghost armour? with all the OP sh*t we have seen recently I would not be surprised if that “ghost armour” was put there to stop shots from hiting the Obj.257 transmition in the back

we have all noticed how high is the ground clearence of the current Obj.257 model and unless it gets changed there’s a chance of that part of the armour to become a viable target, not only because it reduces it’s mobility but also because of the risk of fire

another example of russian bias, in fact if you rotate the tank in tanks.gg and point the mouse to it, it says the shot will be absorved, this means that an important part of the rear plate will not be part of the damage model since it counts as spaced armour

      Like

      1. Actually, just jumped onto Tanks GG. It’s more then just ghost spaced armor defending the transmission…. where the transmission should be IS spaced armor. What should be damage able isn’t

        1. that’s exactly my concearn, go back to tanks.gg and turn the tank around and look in the back (choose visual model), there you can see that the transmission housing blends in with the V shape hull, no matter who looks at it everyone will believe those corners are part of the rear plate and thus a viable target, little do they know they made it spaced armour, if you point at it you get “absorved”

the ghost armour is bad since there’s nothing there but making that part of the real tank spaced armour is even worse because no one will shoot below the hull but instead aim at the hull, unless they fix it for release then it becomes a case where there no longer makes sense to keep the cupolas as part of the normal DM, from now on cupolas should become spaced armouras well or it does not make sense anymore

          1. Exactly, if the removed the ghost spaced armor and made the transmission part of the hit box then it would be entirely possible to track and do damage while it’s side scraping

But that would be too balanced for a stronk stalinium tonk

    1. Go and watch orzanel’s CT video. He has a different view on it. He hated the 257, as the only broken thing is the side, and armor head on don’t work, as it has the same thin auto pen strip above the gun as the IS-3 has to name one. He hated the 705’s, as their guns was underwhelming, armor only worked on med range, and got penned by everything at close range head on. Tier X TD was fun he thought, but it only works on a ridge line, that he don’t have gun depression for. As the upper plate is paper if not. And I have to agree with him. I mean everyone said the same thing about the Foch B. 2 days into the live server. All the “OP” topics went away, because everyone saw it was crap suddenly. I suspect many of the new tanks will be the same here once they get mixed up with the rest. Vs just facing low DPM Russian tier 9 HT’s every game on CT.

  2. The sides of the tank are sloped at ~70° which is coincidentally autobounce angle. So unless you are shooting up at it in a 90° angle towards the tank you will ricochet 10/10 times (unless you’re shooting HEAT and you manage to hit the small uncovered part between spaced armor and tracks).

I come to agree with Circonflexes who pointed out that a design like this has no place in World Of Tanks because everything you have learned for dealing with enemy tanks does not work on this tank: Tracking and doing damage, permadetracking, flanking, going around to the sides where the armor is weaker to do damage (ha ha ha).

And just do add insult to injury this vehicle is placed on Tier IX, so it will meet Tier VII tanks regularly. Those tanks aren’t even able to overmatch the turretroof or pen the hatches with their tiny 75-90mm guns. So a tier 7 medium goes around just to find out the side armor is 203mm effective thickness at the least (at the part where it’s not V shaped autobounce). So in a 3-5-7 MM when driving this tank park it with the back against a wall and be inpenetrable, get HT-15 every time.

    1. 3-5-7 exists? It’s so rare I actually think the game broke when it throws me in that mm…people just overexaggerate, just like they did with foch b, just like they did with m48 patton and with every other tank that get’s a nice treatment.

  3. This could explain why even high caliber guns, inc the 183 can’t overmatch the side if you hit to low on the side. Remove that, and you might make the tank “better”. As the side is the only broken thing with it.

    1. When I said to low. As in when he peeks over a ridge line, and the impact angle is not even 60 degrees. It should go in, but as tanks.gg says “absorbed” due to the extra padding you can’t see visually. Also explains why circon did nothing on his test when he could see the armor clear as day at sub 70 degrees.

  4. This tank is just different so the usual tricks (tap the ‘2’ key, track and do damage, …) do not work. I guess you pro will have no problem to adapt, find different tactics and win anyway. BTW the diamond LFP it’s still a weakspot and the side beak can be penetrated “easily”.

    Liked by 1 person

    1. Funnily enough dabbing the 2-Key twice is the only way to damage this tank if you are in most tier 8 or lower tier vehicles. There simply are no different tactics that give you even the slightest chance of winning (notice the 41°/sec track traverse so good luck circleing it).

  5. 705 impenetrable turret and floating turret and now the 257 energy shields, just mistakes that make the new russian tanks broken, pure coincidence tovarish ))))))

  6. dudes why bother, it has shit frontal armor and top turret armor… why bother shooting the side i mean :)
If he is head on, lower plate has 230mm… if he overangles, hull cheeks go down to 240…
angled as well as possible, the frontal armor goes to 255-265
and it still has gigantic cupolas and overmatchable roof even by most high tier light tanks… ok u can’t track and damage it at the same time, but whatever, just shoot it into oblivion ;)

    1. whoops looking at wrong model haha
still, same shit… the diamond means weak lower plate from the front, and weak upper plate when angled, summed with the weak top turret and gigantic cupolas
honestly it will be amazing in the first week or so, after that people will figure out how to shoot it ad become a normal armor

      1. Yeah it wont be crazy vs tier 9s/10s, but as circon said this thing sees tier 7…
What are tier 7s gonna do? They cant overmatch the roof, mostly, they cant pen LFP without premium ammo, they cant pen the side…

        Like

        1. What abot the ST-1, VK 45.02 P, E75? They are harder to pen than the obj 257 from the front, but you dont see anyone crying about it. The only thing that the obj257 has is really good side armor, but the turrets roof can be over matched by any gun above 90mm

          Like

    2. 240mm sure is OP.
I mean nobody would ever think about using their 300mm+ pen tier 8+ gold ammo, they would rather keep it for spamming at light tanks until their ammorack is empty. But not against the 240mm armor of a Superheavy that is advertised as OP on its first test.

      1. Problem is that this thing can meet tier 7s, tier 7s can spam all the gold they want, it won’t even scratch the paint on this. Good luck dealing with this in a Black Prince, Comet, Leo, vk 30,02d, jagdpanther and so on.

        1. If you’re trying to fight this thing from the front or even the sides while driving a tier 7 you need to reconsider playing the game at these tiers and maybe go back to learning how to play.
Bottom tiers are not meant to win against (and to fight head on in general) top tiers. They are meant to fight other lowtiers or midtiers and only attack hightiers from sides or behind. And in the case of this tank, it’s justr behind, so adapt.

          Like

          1. Yeah, but will this thing care that bottom tiers are not supposed to fight top tier heavies? Nope, it will find them and murder them all. Fight your own tier, attack hightiers from behind, lol, as if you can really choose your engagement against something like this. 3/5/7 mm is a joke.

          2. Yeah, you are su rull of sh….so right i mean…….so easy to avoid this thing in current cage/corridor maps, especially if you happen to play tier 7 heavys, which are very good at “flanking”…..//

            Like

          3. Right.. so if they made the armor on the Maus inpenetrable from the sides and the front you would just go “well, go behind it”. What if one just backs up into a corner and waits for everyone to die on your team, enemy team get greedy and you just sit there and laugh as they bounce their premiumshells and while you take them out 1 by 1.

    1. It’s just common test, calm down. Remember when they wanted to give Conway and Trashbarn 50kph top speed? That was absolutely broken so they decided to cancel that, it’s gonna be fine.

  7. who cares what orzanel thinks anyways. 275 is unbalanced and the frontal armor is good even if it has weakspots. It is a fucking tier 8 tank with 440 alpha and mobility ffs, it sees tier 7 and 8 tanks. People expect tier tanks to have armor, mobilty and firepower and then they complain you need to shoot gold to pen them. People want everything and yet complain, lul.

    Like

    1. -It’s a tier 9 tank, not tier 8
-Bottom tier tanks are not supposed to engage the toptier ones. A tier 9 tank that is pretty much immune to tier 7 is normal, a tier 7 able to pen tier 9s from the front is not. Learn to play, you understand the game wrong.
-The rear of the tank is still shit, it still ahs the overmatch spot above the gun, the gross armor values are still not that high which means exposed to arty and HE ammo which are everywhere these days

      Liked by 1 person

      1. The overmatch Spot above the gun is 30mm so immune to all those 75-90mm guns you see on tier 7.
And this tank can turn sideways on to almost any tier 7 tank and most tier 8 tanks without having to worry about getting penned while still having IS-3 level of mobility.

      2. I think that YOU need to understand this game better…this tier 9 can absolutelly choose its engagement, not the other way around, except ofc if you presume that an ONI,a Black Prince,a T29,a AMX 45,a Tiger II,a KV4 etc etc can all chose where to go fight in any given map,and avoid this thing head on………..cuz according to you,it would be a piece of cake to outplay this thing and drive half across the map with lets say 25kmph,or through open terrain,to “flank” this thing, and get into the fight after 5 min if you are lucky, only to face mediums allready in position to out-dpm you with gold spamming.GG mate.

  8. Lol these people saying the front is weak. Yeah, but then you forget the 25% RNG and then go rage later after you bounce multiple shots because of BS Russian armor angles. I find it funny how people get on these forums and instantly forget about the crappy RNG WoT has. =\

  9. If people were not spamming gold ammo non-stop since it became available for credits there would have been no need for the ridiculous armor changes we’ve had in the past few years and tanks like that would not be as big of an issue.

Gold spammers ruined the game balance as much as WG, because they reduced the effectiveness of armor in the game, and WG – retarded as they are – decided to buff armor instead of removing gold ; just like they replaced oneshots with stun instead of removing arty when everyone complained about how frustrating this class was.

    Like

    1. Yeah, if only people did what you wanted them to do. How dared they! WG put prem ammo for credits only as a decoration and only wanted their game to look a little bit prettier. It’s players fault entirely.

  10. There is something new in tanks.gg, that is the Obj 263B, a tier 10 version of the nerfed 263, but with a 122mm tier 8 gun, that deals 390 dmg. Could It be something like a reward vehicle for those who have the 263 ? I Hope they keep the old stats and leave this vehicle as a reward, because the new 268 4 sucks in everything but the armor. Could you take a look into this 263B and tell us what is It about ?

  11. Eh, torsion bar housings that are pretty isolated and self-contained because of the shape of the actual armor hull itself. I’m not too bothered by this, and think it makes a sort of sense. Far more serious problems with this upcoming patch

  12. This tank is a joke, side armor should not be that way and the frontal armor is not bad either, only if you angle like a retard you get shot in the pike nose in the front. Lower plate is like 190mm effective and upper plate like 270-280mm effective. That is pretty good for a tier 9 HT.

  13. On actual blueprint the Object 257’s lower hull side where the road wheel bogies mounting “arm” connects to the hull, the armor thickness drops form a 85 mm plate to a 20 mm plate ! The uniform 65 mm bottom hull value on WG’s modell is incorrect. If they make the rear transmission housing part of the damage modell and use the real armor value on its lower part, the Object 257 could work. With 20 mm lower hull armor, even tier 7 light tanks with 60 mm+ caliber guns will be able to track it and overmatch/damage its side. However, with 20 mm bottom armor, splash damage from arty and any kind of tank/TD with large caliber gun could devastate it with HE shell. http://warspot.ru/6247-samyy-pervyy-is-7/images?name=%2F000%2F026%2F994%2Fcontent%2Fobject257s04-2e3148f2a8587201189f52e19547b8cd.jpg

  14. Since when is a tier 9 HT with a small lower plate of 190-200 effective considered as “bad? The upper plate is still good and angled. Also the side armor is a joke, too powerfull. Cupolas exist but they are hard to hit in medium range.
