In the post-war period, Britain developed the 200-series universal tanks, positioned in terms of weight between heavy and medium tanks. One of these projects was the FV249, designed during the second half of the 1950s.

Its concept was based on the use of a twin-barrel gun mount to increase firepower. To maintain a high rate of fire during the opening phase of combat, the barrels were water-cooled through jackets similar to those used on naval artillery mounts. An autoloader was installed beneath the turret basket floor and could be rapidly replenished by two loaders when required. The FV249 never progressed beyond the design stage. In addition to the complexity of its loading mechanisms, the project was abandoned due to the declining interest in heavy tanks—development efforts shifted toward main battle tanks, most notably the Chieftain.
