Historical Reference:
In 1957, the company G.O. Noville & Associates proposed an amphibious tank under George Noville’s concept, named ATAC II (Amphibious Tank Alternate Concept, 2nd variant). The design was ambitious but costly, featuring a 90 mm gun, waterjet propulsion, hollow aluminum road wheels, and other innovations.
However, the military requested a cheaper and lighter tank, primarily to ensure transportability by the C-130 Hercules aircraft. To achieve this, the amphibious capability was removed, and the hollow wheels were replaced with steel ones. Nevertheless, the reduction in mass and cost was too insignificant, leading to the project’s cancellation before a prototype was completed. The M551 Sheridan program was prioritized instead.
