Gladiatore [🇮🇹 Italy, HT-9]

The Gladiatore heavy tank project was developed in the late 1950s by the Italian company OTO Melara under a contract from the Italian Ministry of Defense.
Work was carried out in parallel with the European Tank project, which was being developed in West Germany and France. According to the requirements of the Italian military, the Gladiatore was to have a combat weight of around 60 tons, powerful armament (a 105 mm Cannone da 105/76 L/76 gun), and armor protection capable of withstanding hits from contemporary Soviet 100 mm guns. In addition, the tank was required to have a low profile and the ability to operate effectively in mountainous terrain. However, during the evaluation of the preliminary design, it became clear that the vehicle would be too expensive and too complex for the Italian defense industry. As a result, the project received no further funding and was ultimately cancelled.
