In 1970, 🇪🇸 Spain faced the problem of its fleet of American tanks becoming obsolete, including the M47. For political reasons, the United States and the United Kingdom could not supply weapons to the kingdom, nor could Germany, since the gun of the German Leopard 1 was of British origin. As a result, Spain purchased French AMX 30 tanks and, starting in 1974, established production of a licensed version, the AMX 30E, which did not receive any upgrades.
The reliability of the French tanks proved unsatisfactory, forcing Spain to modernize its older M47, M48, and AMX 30 tanks. In 1979, after the end of AMX 30E production, modernization projects emerged, including El Niño—an AMX 30 with an extended hull—and Leox, a Leopard 1 hull modification fitted with an AMX 30E turret.
