Good Idea, Horrible Execution

In total for all the really easy missions, (unless Wargaming decides to host extra bonus ones to give you that required boost to 2500 Coins),  you will be earning 1800 coins only. The rest must be bought on the premium shop.

With 1800 points you can invest them into completing the main “elements” and have 300 coins left spare (this will get you 50x  5x XP missions , which is quite generous, 5 sets of Chinese camouflages and 4 universal crew members with some boosters). This is good for a free-to-play player and this is what the ultimate reward should have been. With the rest of your free coins you can get 2 days of premium account or extra boosters.

Where Wargaming went wrong

If Wargaming didn’t advertise premium tanks, this event would have been a good idea and perfectly within typical Wargaming norms. However, now Wargaming is trying to bait you into spending more money in order to get the 700 required coins to get the tier 8 premium tank you want. Don’t do it.

With 1800 golden coins, you will require to get 700 from the premium shop, conveniently Wargaming thought about this and added shop offers to give you that much required boost.

To get the needed 700 coins, you’ll be spending  23.25 EUR for the batch. This is not a discount for the tier 8. With the regular event 15-30% tech tree tank discounts + universal coupons which can be up to 30-50% off you can use to discount the tank even more. Not to mention, that other servers (especially RU) get 30% discounts in their premium shop occasionally.

Bottom line: do not buy this unless you really really want to.

The Greediness continues

Do you want to pick up a really cool style like the Ad Astra?

Image result for wot ad astra camo"

Well too bad, cause you have to gamble for it. With all of your 1800 coins, you can gamble 3 times, and still risk not receiving the style (and then say goodbye to your free element rewards).

EDITED: This has come to my attention. On the SEA server, Wargaming has to abide by the law and disclose all lootbox odds.

As you can see, gilded pack isn’t as gilded as it seems.

The Epilogue

While it has to be mentioned, for a free to play player the rewards you will be getting are pretty amazing, Wargaming just couldn’t resist to sprinkle in some of their greedy monetization strategies just to bait the player into spending more.

Don’t fall for this, and happy Lunar New Year!

  1. I will play for camo. 70+ tanks in garage, more than half is premium and reward… with some of them I have 0 games… No point to grind new tanks because I dont have time to play it.

  2. ummmm, it’s only FOUR universal crew members with zero-skill BIA, not five. Unless I am missing something the “Metal Element” does not give you a crew member

  3. I think that you made a mistake in the article when you wrote that we can get 5 universal crew members, since Metall Element does not give 5th crew member but gives crew books instead.
Also, you wrote 5 Chinese camouflages, and I think that elemental camos are for any nation, any tier.

  4. Articles about greed are just childrish. WG is a company. Every company is greedy. It must be!

    1. Your opinion.
Not everybody shares the same opinion.
The reason we are in such a mess in the real world is because a lot of companies behave as you mentioned. But, this should not be something we consider as “normal”, neither “must be”.

    2. but not all are LIARS !
WG pretend that WOT is F2P ! AND ITS NOT !
      there is the problem.

fk GOLD FK P2W ! Wallet closed !

    3. Calling people childish just because they voice their opinion is even more childish. Of course a company needs to make money, but these repeated “tank-marathon-hallucinations” are starting to become boring. Heck if they want an event where you can earn premium tanks, give players the actual tank instead of some silly discount. In other games you play to get the actual reward, in WoT you play to get a discount. Typical WG.

      1. Read your first sentence again, please. Here is a summary: Calling people childish is childish.

    4. Yes, companies exist to make money, big surprise. But you can make money by creating quality products and having satisfied customers (good) and also by making inferior products and crappy public relations (WG).

Deceitful behavior makes people hate you, WG. You want to sell? Sell. Free gifts should be clear and simple, free. Marathons – people invest time to win free stuff. Sales – people invest money to buy at discount. Mix all – people will call you a cheater. Add gambling and minors – law will come after you.

    5. The problem is not if they do it or not, the problem is a LACK OF TRANSPARENCY

The amount of medals is split across a lot of missions and the total amount is nowhere to be seen. Players having to do the math and re-count their generosity shouldn’t be part of the game.

    6. Remember Titan Fall? And how they made dlc for free? Or monster Hunter ans their free dlc policy? Those are made by development teams and companies. They just want you to buy the game not the dlc. Those are free for you to download and enjoy! (Except monhun world. That crap was Americanized beyond recognition and they are now selling dlc…filthy American ways…they infected and poisoned them with their capitalistic ways!)

  5. Raise your hand if you’re surprised…
    looks around
Right, don’t see any hands raised.

Ah well, at least I can get a BiA crew out of this along with some camo for unlocking the 5 elements…

  6. i think, for free to play, go for
    1x commander
    1x driver
because of bia. the other members didnt need bia because limited perks.

    and gamble for
    2x camo

    2×300 + 2×600 = 1800

(the other stuff i can bought with credits… crewbooks)

      1. u trust in crew? but u know, wg will change the crew system? dont know where to waste 850k crew books… maybe on stupid tanks like manticore. who suck anyway. the camos are better than the football ones.

  7. This is why I like reading TAP every day…
Thank you for the assessment Verox.
It will give me so much more free time this weekend (because I will not bother playing).

I notice that WG is getting more sophisticated in hiding money traps in a way most players will fail to identify at first sight.

We are lucky to have enough people like yourself, who spend the time and effort to bring transparency!

    1. I don’t really get people complaining about this event. Sure you are not getting any free premium tanks or even much of a discount on one for that matter but what you are getting is a free skill BIA crew, 2 awesome crew skill books, nice camos, x5 exp tokens and personal reserves for doing relatively easy missions for 10 out of 12 days. And if you do all 12 missions then you can get either a couple of prem days or more personal reserves. That’s awesome. Who cares that you can’t get the prem tank for free. The best part is that the missions are easy so they are basically just giving out all that above stuff for logging in and playing a couple of games. Also, if you can’t play all of the days, you can still get some of the rewards.

I hate the P2W aspects of this game as much as the next guy but complaining about this particular event is just whining in my opinion.

      1. WG not offering Prems as a f2p reward is not the issue here. The issue is that their event page tries to lure you into playing, thinking you’d be able to afford them, then realise you can’t later. They never mention the cost of the tanks in the article, you gotta log onto the rewards webpage to do it. Anyone can see that it’s intentional, and you gotta admit it would’ve been the easiest thing for WG to add in that bit of info in the article.

So yes. Offering Prems like this is fine by me, and the system in itself isn’t bad. However, I’m pretty sure most players are pissed at how very restrictive WG has become in mentioning these inconvenient truths.

        1. I guess, but it is easy to figure out and the final mission basically tells you that you can only get 1800 coins. No question that they are trying to goad people into buying stuff, and you are right, that’s wrong. But on the other hand, the rewards are really good this time for the minimal effort required. I’d rather they do stuff like this instead of introducing OP premium tanks (because let’s face it, they need to make money).

I was a lot more put off by the fact that they only gave us the double barrel premium tank over Xmas period so people would gamble if they want to try the new mechanic when the regular tree DB tanks were clearly ready in time.

          1. No, the final mission REQUIRES 1800 coins. Why would that automatically mean that’s all the coins you can get from all the other missions?

And again, it’s easy to figure out for people who actually know their way around the website. Definitely not for new players or the ones paying less attention to details. As I said before, it wouldn’t have taken any effort at all for WG to mention that in the article.

You saying the rewards are good feels kinda hypocritical to me. Yes, the f2p rewards are okay, but the issue here, as I mentioned earlier and as most other people seem to consider, is that the paid rewards are EXCEEDINGLY BETTER. It’s really frustrating when you work your arse off to get a small reward, and other people get much better ones just because they consider opening their wallets for WG is worth it. Kinda the same as for the Christmas event – this year we didn’t even get the usual free large box.

            1. Yes, WG could’ve made it clearer but it is still easy to figure out since the information is all there. The event announcement directly lists all the missions and so all you need to do is go 12*150=1800 to figure out the max number of coins. As for the rewards, if you go to the rewards tab in the event landing site then all the possibilities for spending your coins and what you can get are listed in a nice concise easy-to-understand manner. I think people are over-reacting in this case. There are a lot of things to criticize WG for like the holiday event you mentioned (though we did get a double zero skill commander for free which is nice) but I feel this event is not really one of them because the missions are easy (basically log in and play 1 to 3 games) and you can skip 2 days and still get all the main free rewards.

As for paid rewards, they are tier 8 premium tanks. It is ridiculous to expect them to just gift everybody those for missions which require no effort. As far as I am concerned they are not really part of the event and are there as more of a promotion. I mean you can get the WZ at any time from the tech tree with gold coins so it is not some exclusive OP tank which destroys the balance of the game. The problem with the Holiday Ops tier 8 premium tanks is that they are forcing people to gamble to get them because they are rare and difficult to buy even with money outside of the loot crates. In this event, the tanks are not particularly rare nor are they forcing you to gamble to get them.

To sum up, people complaining about this event is like looking a gift horse in the mouth especially that the rewards are ACTUALLY good (ie not some useless tier 2 tank) and require minimal effort.

    1. It’s the details that count and as ever, Wargaming are wide of the mark!

  8. I hope don’t include the Chinese Doomsday virus in the bundles.

  9. Wargaming knows how to milk stupids … they are the worst gaming company among others. Paying 23 euros for 700 gold coins !?

  10. And from all this easy big €€€€ money grabbing this from the Xmas holidays and now the Chinese New year Premium Shop missions – what does Wargame give us back?

another yes YET another Russian tech Tree for OP Double Barrel fiction Heavy Tanks

And a New CITY Map Berlin …. ever more corridors do we really need more City?

must be mega millions of €€€€ going Wargames direction
shame we see almost f*** all off any of it

  11. Yes you only get 1800 coins vs the 2400 the tanks costs. But lets be realistic here. 1-3 battles a day for 12 days is not gonna give you a tier 8 premium. That’s even less then the cheap and easy T-34-85M marathon they had. Considering most recent tier 8 marathon events you need 300 battles at least.

  12. You can whine as much as you want: The customer decides. If wallets are emptied here, WG made the right decision. Just don’t buy, if you don’t want to. But crying about marketing strategies – questionable or not – is just ridiculous. And do not tell me, you whine about it, because you care about the game: Your echo chambers are full of hate for the game and WG for years now. Move on already.

    1. If I see bullcrap in a free to play game and Wargaming decides to bait their players into buying more of their pixels, I am not going to let it slide. “Your echo chambers are full of hate for the game and WG for years now.” – unlike my predecessor Seb, I am not a “hater”, but if I see anti-consumer practices it’s my job to call it out. If you tolerate such practices, good for you, but not everyone ignores such scummy behavior.

      1. I do understand you want to provide some kind of service here, which is appreciated. The article drips of subjectivity though and propagates a certain oppinion about WG instead of objectively providing information for everyone to evaluate on themselves.
Apart from that, I was mainly trying to make a point to the contributions in the comment section, which I am referring to when using “you” and “echo chambers”.

        1. @stronktenk You need to get yourself a pair of glasses. Does this look like the WoT official information portal to you? On what premise do you think that the information provided needs to objective? This is a blog, they can be as subjective as they wish.

    2. But we are fans stronktenk. We like the game, we enjoy it for the most part or obviously we wouldn’t be here. Pointing out the game or WG’s flaws isn’t ‘hate’ it’s a legitimate opinion to have as a fan. Crying about echo chambers and white knighting for Wargaming is what’s ridiculous.

If you don’t like honest criticism of Wargaming and their product, if it upsets you, which by all accounts it does, then by all means, take your own advice and ‘move on already’.

  13. Already say goodbye to WG after 7 years. After servers merge AW is better to play .And with only 8 euros you can win a tier 5, 3 tier 6 , one tier 8 and one tier 10 tanks in battle path.
