WoWS, Submarine Battles results and work on submarines

We would like to thank all of you for participating in Submarine Battles and for your provided feedback. This test and your comments helped to steer our work on the new ship type:

  • Sonar ping mechanics were updated;
  • Battery charge mechanics were improved;
  • Anti-submarine warfare tools were added for battleships and heavy cruisers;
  • The transfer of information from allies’ Hydrophones was implemented;
  • The detectability by sea of surface ships was lowered for submarines by one third.

Submarines will keep their features and act as stealthy hunters, but other classes will have means of countering them. Some illogical situations will be removed in a new iteration, and the gameplay load on destroyers will be lowered.

WoWS ST, visual effects update

Please note that all information in the development blog is preliminary and subject to change during testing. Any showcased features may or may not end up on the main server.

Soon there will be a closed test session of updated visual effects.

  • Gameplay elements will be supported with visual effects: usage of consumables, fire effect on the ship with “Fire prevention” skill and others;
  • Updated shells tracers: now lighting on map and shadows from islands are taken into account for them;
  • Light and shadows of visual particles (e.g. fires) now take sun’s position into account in real-time;
  • Changed effects of torpedoes, shells, planes exploding and falling on water and earth, smoke, fires, and many others.

Besides that, we’re working on effects for the destruction of the ship, for AA, and the movement animation of AA guns.

WoWS ST 0.9.8, new ships

British cruiser Belfast ’43, Tier VIII

Belfast 1943 represents the Town-class light cruiser as she would have appeared in the year 1943. Her model differs from the one of cruiser “Belfast” in having a higher number of dual purpose guns and AA mounts, a slightly different superstructure geometry, and a Fighter catapult. The ship is equipped with twelve 152 mm guns with powerful HE shells, a torpedo armament with the ability to launch individual torpedoes, decent concealment, a “Short-Burst Smoke Generator” consumable, and a “Surveillance Radar” consumable with the 9 km ship detection range.

Thanks to her good concealment and “Surveillance Radar” consumable, Belfast ’43 can help allies in fighting for caps and hunting for destroyers. Her special Smoke Generator – with its shorter reload and smoke screen dispersion times – will be useful when there is a need to retreat, but it doesn’t allow to effectively fire at targets from inside the smoke.

American battleship Oklahoma, Tier V

WoWS ST 0.9.8, World of Warships birthday, dockyard

Please note that all information in the development blog is preliminary and subject to change during testing. Any showcased features may or may not end up on the main server.

Update 0.9.8 kicks off an event dedicated to the 5-year anniversary of World of Warships!

One of the main features of the update is the new temporary battle type with an uneven distribution of ships per team – Asymmetric battle. One team will consist of a small number of Tier VII-VIII ships, and another one will consist of a greater number of Tier V-VI ships. You’ll be able to freely enter battles on Tier V-VI ships, but to participate in the Asymmetric Battle on a Tier VII-VIII ship you’ll need a new temporary resource – battle tokens – which are received by playing this battle type.

A new permanent campaign “Five ages of navy” and a collection of the same name await players. Elements of the collection can be obtained only from the “Five ages of navy” containers. These containers are obtained by completing tasks and missions of the campaign.
