Ion S. Dumitru was born on 1st March 1921 in Robănești, Dolj County in southern Romania. After finishing his high school education in Craiova, he enrolled to study on military high school in Timișoara, where he graduated in 1941 as one of the best students. He continued his education in Infantry Officer School in Bucharest and after a successful graduation, he was promoted to the rank of sublocotenent (Second Lieutenant). At his own request, he was then transferred to his first operational unit – the freshly rebuilt 1st Tank Regiment stationed in Târgoviște. This unit participated in Battle of Stalingrad, and practically ceased to exist due to crushing losses – only two tanks and 944 men survived.

At the time, Romania was allied to Nazi Germany, and Dumitru thus received tank warfare training programme in Fallingbostel Tank Training Centre. Here, Dumitru became a specialized tanker on a PzKpfw IV medium tank, which was used by Romanians under designation T-4. After his return, 1st Tank Regiment was deployed in Moldavia as a part of 1st Armoured Division Greater Romania (part of 4th Army, Army Group South Ukraine).

The T4 was in Romanian service thorough World War II, even after the country switched sides.

War Thunder – М26 Pershing with Т99 rocket launcher

Today we are introducing a medium US tank – the M26 Pershing with T99 rocket launcher system – a premium vehicle, which will take its place at the 4th rank.

Vyacheslav Bulannikov, Game Designer:

This vehicle will be the first rank 4 tank with rocket armament and will represent a serious threat to any enemy that meets it on the battlefield. The Pershing by itself can be a very dangerous opponent at its rank, and this additional weaponry expands its potential even further.

Matchmaking Improvements: Quantitative Restrictions

Dear players!

We are pleased to inform you that with the next Battle Ratings and Economy update in War Thunder we will expand the process of the matchmaker by introducing a new set of rules, which makes it possible to influence the build of the teams in all game modes.

The rules will be very flexible and can be applied to individual ranges of BR’s, specific types of vehicles and also for specific vehicles. This will allow more precision on the distribution of the forces in battles – ultimately making battles more balanced realising a previously unattainable quality of gameplay. Here is some information which should help you understand the system.

The potential of the new rules is extensive. A good example of how these rules can be used is historical events, which are interesting for players who like realism and fixed setups in battles, and not using matchmaking with BR. Previously, we could only create some events with allowed vehicles and it wasn’t possible to limit the numbers of specific vehicles. This had negative aspects for gameplay in these events, because of course our players prefer the most effective vehicles, which nullified the historical balance.

The new rules give us the functionality that will not only indicate the setups available for the battle, but also to limit the number of individual machines, this will be a big step towards expanding the diversity of tactics and gameplay.

The example with historical events is intended to show the possibility of using the rules, these rules will also apply to tournaments, squadron battles and also, which is extremely important, even in random battles.

Specifically, random battles will have the new rules applied first.

Currently, battles at the higher ranks (from BR 7.0 upwards) are seriously complicated by a margin of the top vehicles in War Thunder, because while the creation of game sessions for BR 8.0 matchmaking will be made only from vehicles with same rank or lower, while the vehicles with BR 7.0 have spread to both sides and thus evenly distributed over the battles receiving much more varied gameplay rather than highest BR’s.

Q.Why do I have so many vehicles with BR 8.0 in my battles?
A.Because matchmaking for BR 8.0 is possible for BR 8.0 or lower.

In such a complex situation, the use of tactics in battles with BR 8.0 does not give the desired effect, because the enemy, which is constrained by these rules, exceeds you not only in thickness of armour, but also, usually by quantity. This situation needed to be corrected.

War Thunder Q&A

1. Will you release a list of vehicles that are planned to be added in the game?

Answer: “We cannot always be 100% sure that we can say about all the planned vehicles that’s why we make devblogs when we are certain that a vehicle will be introduced.”

2. Do you plan to add “armour value” for such modules as transmission, engine, radiator? Do you plan armour fatigue effect?

Answer: “Probably. And we are already testing the “fatigue” effect.”

3. As for the British tree – will there be only original tanks or we will also see U.S. vehicles used by the British?

Answer: “Most likely at the “starting” level of the tree there will be mostly original British designs.”

4. When will radiator damage actually affect anything? It should because of engine overheating.

Answer: “We have a plan for a more detailed engine model, once it is implemented for aircraft we will probably implement it for tanks as well and radiator damage will affect engine overheating.”

5. When can we expect a winter location for the allies, perhaps Ardennes?

Answer: “We already have an approved list of locations for the next 2-3 updates. Ardennes will most likely come the next year.”

6. Will you make realistic craters for bombs and rockets?

Answer: “Yes. The same way as current ground is terramorphing.”

7. When can we expect that bomb craters will be switched off. People are scared by pits appearing under their tanks.

Answer: “We will fix it in one of the future updates. Visually it will be displayed as a not so deep crater for tanks and for aircraft it will look deeper. It should look very nice.”

8. The Berlin map has too much haze compared to the other locations, is this a bug?

Answer: “No. In the Berlin location you see smoke from a burning city.”

9. Do you plan soviet tanks after the T-54?

Answer: “The Т-62 is possible, T-55 will be implemented for sure. Perhaps some other prototype from this era. there were some really interesting vehicles.”

10. Do you plan to reflect explosives in the shell info card?

Answer: “Yes, the amount and type of the explosives will be displayed on the info card and depending on this some corrections to the shell’s damage may be implemented if something is not fully correct at the moment. The explosive damage will also be calculated not manually but based on the formula depending on the type of explosives and its mass. This will decrease possible mistakes in the data and thus the whole system will be more fair and clear.”

War Thunder – [Development] T92

Today we are introducing a light US tank from the 50s – the T92, which will continue the lineup of the light tanks and will take its place at the 5th rank.

Vyacheslav Bulannikov, Game Designer:

Currently, the US light tank tree cuts off at rank 4. It ends with the M41A1. We’ve decided to introduce a new top-range rank 5 tank to this development line. The presence of a mobile tank in high-rank battles will add a lot of variety to the gameplay, presently, none of the nations have vehicles like this at rank 5.

WT Q&A

1. In the recent “Destructible environment” announcement you showed us an example with buildings on “Berlin” map. We know that when this feature arrives buildings only on this location will be destructible, but what can you tell us about your general plans on the feature – will all buildings be destructible or some of them will not in favour of gameplay?

Answer: “Bunkers will not be destructible – they could not be destroyed effectively even by bombs. Also we think that in the future we will make buildings around spawn zones non-destructible for obvious reasons. But in the beginning they will be destructible as well.  Also remember that not every weapon is capable of destroying a building – a certain calibre and shell yield is required.”

2. About destruction physics – the debris will remain on the map and on the server for me and other players or they will disappear?

Answer: “Currently they disappear and probably they will do so in the future as well – for reasons of performance and internet traffic. Each piece of debris should not also be displayed but also all the changes of its position/integrity should be sent to all the players and that means additional server load and users’ channel load, sometimes it may be really significant.”

3. Why does transmission set on fire? It’s only metal and oil that doesn’t set on fire when hit by a shell and there is not enough of it to burn the vehicle, why don’t you just reduce vehicle’s mobility when transmission is hit? Continue reading “WT Q&A”

War Thunder – T25 Medium Tank and Panzerwerfer 42 Auf.Sf

In today’s Development Blog we will present to you the T25 Medium Tank – An American prototype vehicle with 90mm anti-tank gun and the Panzerwerfer 42 Auf.Sf – A German half-tracked multiple rocket launcher.

T25 Medium Tank

Vyacheslav “BVV_d” Bulannikov, Game Designer:

The Т25 is an experimental US medium tank armed with the 90mm М3 cannon. The vehicle is interesting in that it has decent weaponry and armour for its rank, this vehicle will be able to bolster the American medium tank fleet available at this tier where the M4A3 often experiences difficulties when combating enemy heavy tanks.

War Thunder – [Development] BМ-8-24

Seb: 1000th post! YAY

Dear friends!

This year, we made the decision to introduce a tank-mounted rocket launcher to the US lineup; the Calliope. Following this, this addition in-game was received warmly by many players, and so, due to its success as an interesting and unique vehicle, we are planning to introduce similar vehicles, with unguided rocket armament for other nations too!
