War Thunder: AH-1G Cobra: Strike Fast, Strike Hard

The AH-1G Cobra is a dedicated attack helicopter design, derived from the well-known UH-1 Huey, which primarily supported the combat actions of U.S. forces in the Vietnam War. Keep your head inside your hatch tankers, the Cobra is coming in hot with the release of War Thunder update 1.81!

Briefly: The Huey’s worthy successor in the gunship role, sporting excellent speed and handling characteristics in combination with deadly weaponry.

Parallel to the development of the UH-1 transport helicopter, Bell was actively conducting research on helicopter gunship designs. This resulted in the creation of the “Iroquois Warrior”, a mockup of a gunship design based on components from the UH-1B Huey. The mockup was presented to interested Army officials in June 1962, resulting in a proof-of-concept contract later that year. Following the contract award, Bell created the Model 207 “Sioux Scout”, which was evaluated by the Army in early 1964.

Although impressed by the Model 207, the Army seeked a larger and more powerful design, resulting in the creation of a new competition of which Bell was not a part of. Instead, Bell independently continued developing and refining their gunship design,  eventually creating the Model 209 – a design that was a combination of the Iroquois Warrior mockup and the concepts behind the Model 207.

Meanwhile, the ongoing Vietnam War sparked an urgent demand for dedicated attack helicopters. Although gunship versions of the UH-1 performed this role with relative success, the fact that they weren’t initially intended for this role somewhat limited their effectiveness. Back in the States, the Army’s ongoing competition produced no winning design as a result of technical and political difficulties. To quickly address their demand, the Army started looking for an interim design to act as a stopgap measure in 1965.

Soon after testing of the Model 209 concluded in September 1965, the Army decided to award Bell with a manufacturing contract later that year. The contract officially put the Model 209 into production under the Army designation of UH-1H HueyCobra, but was later designated to AH-1G Cobra.

Information about helicopters in War Thunder

FAQ

— Which nations will have helicopters available from the start?

We will start with helicopters of the USA and USSR. As for the introduction of helicopters for other nations, we will let you know at later date.

— In which game modes will helicopters be implemented?

Helicopters will be available in combined ground battles (all modes) from rank V. We will probably add ‘helicopter vs helicopter’ battles in the future.

— May I join the battle in a helicopter from the start?

Helicopters are limited with spawn points, just as with aircraft, so you should first gain enough SP whilst controlling ground vehicles.

— Do you plan any unique events for helicopters only or events where they play a special important role?

It’s too early to say at the moment, considering helicopters’ characteristics and capabilities. I think that special events will be introduced when the time comes.

— What will the control mechanics be in different game modes? Will there be “full controls” option as for aircraft?

As is the case for aircraft, we plan 4 control modes as for aircraft.

WT Dev Blog: Leopard 2A4

In short: the most up to date “Leopard” in-game, a new top-tiered vehicle in the German line-up. It maintains high-level firepower and maneuverability, but now offers additional protection, especially in the front.

Entering service with the German Bundeswehr in the mid ‘80s, the Leopard 2A4 was the final modification of the early serial production Leopard 2. War Thunder tankers and fans of German ground vehicles can look forward to the addition of one of the most iconic German steel beasts of all time, coming to the game with update 1.79!

Based on the testing results gathered from the various different Leopard 2K prototypes, a new Leopard 2 prototype was constructed that would be more representative of the final version of the vehicle. Designated as Leopard 2AV, the new prototype featured a redesigned hull and turret over the Leopard 2K. Furthermore, the prototype was tested with two different cannons; the British L7 105mm rifled and the German Rheinmetall 120mm smoothbore cannon.

WT Dev Blog: I.A.R. 81-C: Supporting the Axis

Seb: Finally the plane all Romanians were waiting for. PS: Really, really sorry for being inactive, this time I had to work a topography project. Will post as much as possible tonight. By mid-July I hope everything will return to normal.

In short: The first aircraft produced in Romania in War Thunder. A premium of the 2nd rank, ease of controllability, armed with two 20mm German MG 151/20 cannons with a large amount of ammunition, and machine guns.

The I.A.R. 81-C is the final wartime modification of one of the most well known domestically produced Romanian WW2 military aircraft. This aircraft model has been created by one of our players, Vitaliy Vostokov a.k.a. NovA29R and thanks to the War Thunder revenue share program, the I.A.R. 81-C will once more take to the skies as a new user-made vehicle, coming to the game with the upcoming update 1.79!

History:

After fulfilling several government and licence contracts, the relatively young I.A.R. (Industria Aeronautică Română) company had enough resources and technical know-how to begin developing their own fighter aircraft. Taking inspiration from previous licenced projects, I.A.R. engineers initiated a private venture by beginning working on their own fighter aircraft in late 1937, which would later be known as the I.A.R. 80. As work was progressing slowly, the first prototype wasn’t completed until spring 1939. Initial testing produced positive results, proving that the I.A.R. 80 could be considered a modern fighter despite not matching the performance of contemporary Bf 109s and Spitfires.
