In the post-war years, Poland produced tanks under Soviet licenses, but retained the potential for its own developments. In the 1960s, a project for the heavy tank 63TP Rycerski was proposed — a vehicle with a classic layout intended to combine the best solutions of both Western and Soviet tank design schools.
The project envisioned a modern level of firepower and mobility, as well as improved crew working conditions. It was planned to increase the gun’s vertical elevation angles and simplify maintenance. The first-line ammunition was stored in the rear turret bustle, which ensured loader convenience and better turret balance, reducing stress on the gun laying drives. The project was never built in metal.
