Work on the Coutelas tank destroyer project was started by Hotchkiss around the mid-1950s. The vehicle was designed to meet specific customer requirements: combat weight lower than even noticeably heavier medium-class vehicles, horizontal aiming angles increased up to 60 degrees, a stereoscopic rangefinder, and an anti-aircraft turret.
The vehicle also required a large ammunition load and strong frontal armor. As a result, the Coutelas was planned to have a turret with a limited horizontal traverse sector instead of a fixed casemate. Part of the ammunition was intended to be stored in the turret, with the rest in a mechanized rack above the engine compartment. A commander’s cupola with a built-in rangefinder was also planned. However, Hotchkiss engineers’ work did not progress beyond the preliminary design due to declining interest from customers.
