“Allow me to tell you of something that has troubled me greatly of late. By order of our lord, a statue of a bull made of gleaming brass with a hollow belly was installed in the palace courtyard. On certain days, whenever something—or perhaps someone—greatly angers the ruler, we servants are ordered to light a fire beneath the statue. What happens next remains a mystery to us, for we are sent away. Yet soon afterward, the palace fills with a dreadful roar. The sound is terrifyingly similar to that of a human being. And I cannot help but wonder: does some spirit dwell within the statue, or is it the bull itself that suffers?”
