As weapon power increased, traditional casemate SPG layouts no longer met modern requirements, leading to the development of vehicles with fundamentally new designs.
One such project was the Headshaker self-propelled gun, featuring a manned gun mount capable of traversing in two planes. Placing the traverse mechanism in the upper part of the casemate significantly reduced the vehicle’s silhouette while allowing the use of a powerful gun with a wide range of aiming angles. Another distinctive feature was its cooling system, which used finned heat-exchanger elements to improve gun reliability. However, despite its advantages, the project’s complexity and high production costs ultimately led to the cancellation of its development.

Nice historical breakdown on the Headshaker! The gun cooling mechanic sounds interesting, and that low silhouette design with two-plane traverse is pretty clever for a Tier IX TD. Shame about the production costs killing the project, seems like a classic case of ambition vs reality.
