High-contrast colors and unusual patterns are probably the last things that come to mind when thinking about vehicle concealment. But that was never the goal. Camouflage was first tested on tanks and ships during the First World War. These innovative schemes were designed to confuse the enemy, causing them to misjudge a vehicle’s position, direction of movement, and speed. On tanks, however, the camouflage failed to take hold: the marshy terrain of the Eastern Front rendered any concealment ineffective. Nevertheless, this approach left its mark on history as one of the earliest experiments in strategic deception.
