After the end of the Korean War, the People’s Liberation Army received captured American and British tanks, including the Centurion and the M46 Patton. At the same time, Chinese engineers were tasked with creating a vehicle capable of surpassing Western counterparts. By the late 1950s, several projects had been developed, one of which was named Renmin Tanke (“People’s Tank”). Its distinguishing feature was the extensive use of technical solutions from both Soviet and American tank design schools. After reviewing the projects, the PLA command decided to further develop the mass-produced Type 59, while the Renmin Tanke was reoriented for export and equipped with NATO-standard guns. However, due to a lack of orders, not a single unit was ever built.
