By the mid-1960s, the armed forces of the Czechoslovak Republic planned to obtain a license to produce the Soviet T-55 medium tank. At the same time, an alternative option was considered — a domestically developed tank with similar performance characteristics. By 1964, a preliminary design of a vehicle named ZŤS Vz.63-1 Ogar was ready, combining the best solutions of the Soviet and Czechoslovak schools of tank design. However, after analyzing all the advantages and disadvantages, it became clear that producing a licensed copy of the T-55 using Soviet technologies was significantly cheaper than organizing production of a new domestically developed tank. As a result, construction of a prototype was abandoned, and all project documentation was archived.
