ARL Projet F [🇫🇷 France, HT-11]

Historical Reference:

Before the outbreak of the Second World War, the French Army launched a program to develop super-heavy breakthrough tanks. The occupation of France halted all work, but in the summer of 1944 Paris and its surrounding areas were liberated, making it possible to resume tank development. In the summer of 1945, engineers of the ARL company presented an initiative design for a super-heavy breakthrough tank similar to those developed before the war, but based on a new technological foundation, which received the designation Projet F.

The tank was designed using large cast and rolled components and was equipped with an electromechanical transmission. An auxiliary turret was placed in the front of the hull, intended to be armed either with a small-caliber gun or a flamethrower. The main turret mounted a powerful 138.6 mm naval gun, and the presence of a rangefinder for the commander significantly increased firing accuracy. Following the war, it became clear that super-heavy tanks were too vulnerable to air attack and too expensive to produce, and postwar France was in no position to manufacture such costly vehicles. As a result, work on the ARL Projet F did not progress beyond the conceptual design stage.
