The first postwar projects of a new generation of German tanks appeared in the early 1950s. One such project was the heavy tank Eisbär (Polar Bear). The vehicle was armed with a new, powerful 120 mm gun with separate loading and was equipped with a hydropneumatic suspension that allowed adjustment of ground clearance and hull inclination. To counter prospective attack helicopters that were expected to enter service worldwide, a remotely controlled anti-aircraft mount with a twin automatic cannon setup was installed on the turret. However, with the development of guided anti-tank missiles, views on future tank design shifted toward lighter, faster, and more maneuverable vehicles, which ultimately put an end to the development of heavy tanks, including the Eisbär project.
