Expecting that World War II would reach the shores of the Empire, Japan began preparing for the defense of Honshu and the other islands of the archipelago. This led to the assignment to create a tank destroyer capable of coastal defense as well as countering any Allied armored vehicles in ground combat.
Various naval guns—already built but no longer needed by the Imperial Navy—were considered for use as the main armament. To increase rate of fire, a twin-gun mount was designed, installed in a spacious welded turret. To further enhance firepower, the installation of three machine guns (two forward-facing and one rear) and a 20-mm rapid-fire cannon on the turret was planned.
However, the excessive weight and production complexity led to the project’s cancellation.
