FV240 [🇬🇧 United Kingdom, HT-8, twin-barrel gun mechanic]
The FV240 tank project, developed between 1948 and 1952, envisioned the creation of a well-armored vehicle, especially in the frontal projection, armed with a pair of 20- or 32-pounder guns capable of penetrating Soviet tanks known to the British head-on.
Each gun was to be loaded in parallel, which theoretically offered an advantage in rate of fire. Good vertical aiming angles would have allowed it to engage targets from the reverse slopes of hills. Despite the vehicle’s promising characteristics, the project never advanced beyond the drawing board. British intelligence learned of the development of new Soviet heavy tanks that required more powerful weaponry to counter. Another heavy tank with a single but more powerful gun—the FV214 Conqueror—went into production instead.
