The unprecedented large-scale offensive, codenamed Operation Overlord, decisively turned the tide of World War II in favor of the Allies. On June 6, 1944, supported by over 5,000 ships and landing craft, approximately 160,000 soldiers stormed five heavily fortified beaches in an attempt to break through German defensive lines. In the following days, the Allies continued to push forward through occupied territory, weakening Germany’s grip on Western Europe and immortalizing the windswept beaches of Normandy as the site of one of the boldest military operations in history.
