WoT: Data Analysis on Trends in Playerbase Size – EU and NA Server Playerbase

source: reddit
Ran this using a Python code pulling data from the official API

Notes:

  • New Players; Retained: means player started playing that year but also played next year
  • New Players; Not Retained: means player started playing that year but quit before next year
  • Returning Players; Retained: means player was active prior to that year but also played next years
  • Returning Players; Not Retained: means player was active prior to that year but quit that year.
  • Some stats are very bad for 2023 such as “Returning Players; Not retained Next Year” but it’s possible they just haven’t played yet in 2024.

Observations:

  • Overall the game is dying but at a fairly slow rate?
  • New Players Retained next year is very low which is bad.
  • Returning Players Retained went up during covid which makes sense, but is now decreasing.

Method: I developed a Python script using an API to iterate through roughly 70 million possible player ID combinations on the NA server (200 million on EU server). Players were included in the data study if they had played more than one game and had a personal rating above zero. The “Join” date refers to when the player’s account was created. The “Quit” date is when the player last played a battle. The “Active” period represents the years between the Join and Quit dates.

  1. tldr – WoT stays alive through long time players and is unable to get newcomers to stick to the game.

Also, playerbase overall has been declining since 2017/2018, when Object 252U and WZ-120-1G FT redefined the concept of premium tanks and ammo-vs-armor interaction.

  2. not surprised even a bit.
many players only stay because of the money they already spent on this fucking dogshit, while new players with more iq than ears see the state of this “game” and leave for good, guessing right around the time they reach tier 6-7, the worst tiers in the game

    1. Wot express still on topic on game going die soon and also few stupid people on comment even if they are trolling or not. Just like any other online game .. they will have more players on first numbers of years before it starts to slowly drop but mostly remains stable

      1. Same exact people in Na/eu complains to stop some content from happening are now fixated with game us dying crap

  3. Meanwhile useless 43% players from Poland think the game is great with their 40,000 battles and all the premium tanks 🙄

  4. Game is becoming shit, have all T10, 279e,260 all premiums, assembley shop tanks and play tier 3,4,5 cause is funn… From tier 6 and up to 10 so much toxicity..damn

  5. Wasn’t 2017 when they implemented new matchmaking rules to make battles more uniform and separate new players from clubbers at low tiers? Guess that didn’t work out for retention. Should have removed arty.
