ELC EVEN 90 – “Le Final”

“10 years. On December 27, it’ll be 10 years since I started wearing my uniform. There could have been a ceremony or a dinner for officers. But this summer my division unanchored and headed out west. Is it a lot, 10 years? Well, I was doing what I loved and I lived every day as if it were my last. I have enough memories to last several lifetimes. I could have worked my way up to a new rank or position a hundred times, but I didn’t. I could have at least got my own company to command, but I didn’t. That was probably foolish. I was in my element, I did what I knew and I was good at it. I was living by an idea. But an idea alone will only get you so far, however important it may be. It definitely won’t get you all the way out west with the division, even though that would have meant riding in an officer’s cabin drinking the best coffee around. I was offered that, many times. But what about the old country? Family? These breathtaking sunsets? The snow falling in the light of a street lamp. What of that could I take with me other than memories?
