WoWS: Graf Zeppelin update from Developers

Source: Ev1n, then he deleted it and let MeatheadMilitia post it.

There has been a lot of controversy in the community lately regarding the recently released premium ship Graf Zeppelin, and we would like to share an update on the situation, as well as our thoughts on how we believe we should proceed.

First of all, we realize the ship definitely did not meet the expectations of the community, it is clear that we didn’t put enough effort into fine tuning and finding the right balance and play style for the Graf. We really wanted to release her for Gamescom and uphold tradition, but could only do that with dive bomber setups if we later wanted to add back torpedo squadrons that had been positively received (but also too powerful) in the first round of testing. This was a technical limitation, but also a choice we were fine with, as we thought we could balance the dive bomber setups to be competitive.

To make things worse, the final changes that were done for her didn’t go through usual procedure and community contributors did not have a chance to correct the previews that they had prepared, which meant that the thing they showed to their audiences was different than what was eventually released on our live servers. We admit that the decision to release this ship in the current condition was wrong. We should have spent more time working on it and we need to take responsibility for this mistake, as well as provide our apologies to the community.

A separate but very connected topic is the situation with iChase and his removal from Community contributor program. After reviewing our decision to remove iChase from our contributor program we agree with iChase, our decision was hasty. In hindsight we should have reached out directly to him and talked about our concerns. iChase has been developing great WoWS content for years now and deserved as much. We would like to apologize to iChase for our haste. In our passion to protect our development team we acted too quickly. We will learn from this and use this situation to help our Contributor program improve. We admit that the decision to release this ship in the current condition was wrong, and we should have spent more time working on it and we would like to take responsibility for this mistake and provide our apologies to the community.

However, we know that a simple “sorry” is by far not enough in this case, so we will do the following:

First of all, the refund policy for this ship will be changed. No matter how many battles you played on it, until it is fixed you can request to have your purchase refunded by following these links:

EU – https://eu.wargaming.net/support/tickets
NA – https://na.wargaming.net/support/tickets
ASIA – https://asia.wargaming.net/support/tickets

Steps – Click Link > Click Submit Ticket > Click WoWS > Billing Support > Type “Refund” > Click “Problem Not Solved” > Click “refund” in “Help Topics: Billing

Those players who would like to keep the ship and help us make it better we would like to invite to participate in further balance testing.

This would follow the steps below:

  1. Starting from now we will remove the ship from sales.
  2. All owners of GZ will be invited to provide feedback about her and to communicate with the dev team alongside with community contributors, super testers and WG employees in a special Facebook group created specifically for this purpose. This could take a while, as we believe there will be different options to try out, while it will also be the first time we try something like this. We hope that together we can get it right and make Graf Zeppelin great again.
  3. After the balancing process is over and the finalized version of the ship goes live there will be an exclusivity period of 3 months. This means that GZ will not go on sale during this time and will only be available for these original owners.
  4. We will also create a custom permanent camouflage for GZ, which will only be available for players who bought the original ship. Players will also be invited to take part in the creative process to figure out what this camouflage will look like.

We are sincerely sorry for this situation and for causing frustration where there should have been only satisfaction from getting a great new ship and a boatload of fun.

We’re now manning all action stations to fix it and to prevent it from happening again in the future.

Daniil Volkov, Development Director World of Warships

  1. I do not play WOWS but Wargaming has once again insulted me as a customer of WOT. They have a bad attitude towards their customers. There is a clause in their terms of services that they can cancel your account at any time for any reason, which is intended to prevent customers form defrauding Wargaming, but it is used instead to leverage and strongarm customers to comply with any and every desire that Wargaming as, such as to limit or control free speech.

    1. No accounts were cancelled regarding the Graf Zeppelin issue.

This whole stuff was made into a drama for the sake of drama. WG have all the rights to remove anyone from the community contributors if they insult/offend the developers and advice players to flood support with tickets. Feedback’s place is on the forums not in support tickets.

Would you employ somebody who is insulting the higer-ups?

Inb4 this wasn’t a job at WG. Yes I know but WG is still granting the CCs special privileges and interestingly enough others who were also having a negative opinion about the ship weren’t removed from the CC program…

      1. Well iChase only said that if you bought the ship you should ask the support for a refund.
That is not really a bad advice and for sure no “flooding” of the support.

And if you compare his insults with the standard foch video before he was removed it is still very tame so no need to protect the developers…. “In our passion to protect our development team we acted too quickly”

Looks to me like they knew very well that the ship was bad but just hoped that nobody would call them out.
And when they were called out emotions took over and they removed iChase.

“…And if you compare his insults with the standard foch video before he was removed it is still very tame”

So, was that the only thing he said or he threw some insults as well…?

Comparing the severity of insults is at the very least childish. Maybe that’s how you think because you might be a child, but this isn’t how the world works.

An insult is an insult. It doesn’t matter if you call someone an idiot or a piece of shit….you insulted him anyway. Both insulted them and they should have the same treatment.

What happened here is that for some reason this idiot “iChase” is getting very special treatment, and nobody’s paying any attention.

You go ahead and insult them, see what happens. And still, you worship him…

Lastly, it doesn’t matter if there’s an issue with something because of premature release, all you have to do is to post a civilized and mature formal complaint. Raging and spitting venom all over the place because you’re not satisfied is, again, childish.

If you buy a car and after a month it breaks down what are you going to do? Are you going to crash it into the dealership and jump out and kill everyone?

I don’t know why WG has gone so soft but this is wrong. Every time there’s an issue some hotshot youtuber will start cursing and asking for people to get fired and shit? Does that make a lot of sense?

            Wtf man are you serious?
Nuance is one of the main foundations for the justice system for example.

This damn black and white thinking of yours is the problem not my try to find consistency in WGs decisions.

What do you mean he is getting special treatment?

“worship” just for the record i dont worship everyone who i am defending.

And if i insult WG Staff nothing will happen.

I hope everybody who is responsible for the balance in WoT gets fired,
            .
            .
            .
            see nothing

well in a perfect world yes.
            But here comes the nuance.
Fochs video was just raging and spitting venom.
            iChases video was not.
It was obious that he was angry but over all it had still usefull information.

Maybe people should not take everything so literally they hear on the internet.
He said that somebody should get fired.
I said more then one time i hope XY dies horribly.
Has any action from his side followed his statement?
            No?
So maybe he just said it in anger and did not actually want somebody to get fired…

If WG is concerned about it they should speak to him like they stated above and not cut any strings to him because of one video were his tone went off a little bit.
            That i would consider childish.

  2. This is more of a grey area as compared to the “Great Foch Up.” Yeah…iChase was too insulting and at a certain level I expect WG to protect its staff, on the other hand everyone seemed to agree that this ship was awful and you have to wonder about WG’s grind to put out content whether it’s ready to go or not.

  3. This is so stupid, have to side with wargaming on this. They would have fixed the Graf anyways. Imagine all the bad press they would have gotten if they didn’t release it for gamescom. Get a real job and try talking like that to management see what happens.

    1. what bad press??????”we are sorry it is not finished,we will relese it when it is done” is all they had to do…….but NOOOO…..that would be much worse than this situation?….do you even think about the stuff you type? or you just let loose and type the first thing that comes out of yours arse?

      1. Do you listen to your own advice? NOOO…… with all the kiddies and whiners in the game demanding the Graf, they wouldn’t understand that it needed more time. Stop spewing the first thing that comes out your arse.

  7. GZ is a joke anyway and need to be finish. WG take action about Ichase video is expected but not that swiftly and brutal, if they talk to ichase to remove that video in civil-manner(like ask him remove-edit-reupload that video) maybe everything didn’t blown-up like this

        1. Grinding for what? If it is at the state it is now it will be absolutely shit for even grinding credits. And if they decide to make a german cv-tree they have make it up completely out of their own asses.

Kind of like adding a navy that mostly consists of ships from 8-10 years after the war *cough* soviet *cough* What’s next? The Swiss navy?

Jesus fucking christ WG, decide what you want to fucking do…

  11. With this pattern of behavior on WG’s part, I’m sure the community is reacting to WG seemingly cracking down on honest opinions. Is this going to mean all CC’s have to tow the party line or be purged? Thats the question everyone is asking, and rightly so. WG is going to have to do more than mearly apologize in this case. They need to give the community some assurance that the trusted opinions of CCs is not being threatened with sacking if they don’t paint a rosey picture every time a new premium comes out.
