Identifying the New Tier 10 Lights

If you haven’t noticed, there are new tier 10 light tanks being released sometime in the future. Some of the new light tanks were already known and others were more obscure. In this post, I’ll talk about what tank they could be and what features they could carry into World of Tanks.

XM551 Light Tank

This is likely the XM551, the prototype of the M551 “Sheridan”. The XM551 was first tested on an M41 hull, this configuration exists on the T49 (also, the T49 in WoT is an amalgamation of two different projects). The first complete XM551 prototype pilot was delivered on June, 1962. If implemented into World of Tanks at tier 10, we can safely say that ATGMs may become a real feature in the game. I also hypothesize that the T49 will split into two tanks. The M41 with the XM551 test bed turret may become a tier 9 while the T49 with the 90mm may stay at tier 8.

Rheinmetall Patent Tank

In 1957,  Rheinmetall filed a patent that looks eerily similar to the one shown in WG Fest. They patented a structure on top of the turret that can make its gun depress lower. While it’s not the exact same tank, they do share some features, but differ in other ways. The turret used an odd oscillating-ish type of turret. The structure moved with the gun so the turret can stay at a relatively low height without sacrificing depression. One of the few differences I could find is the one piece upper front plate on the patent compared to the two piece upper front plate on the photograph in WG Fest. This tank was probably a project Rheinmetall was working on and patented the feature by using a vague schematic of the real project. This tank may have a new type of turret that we haven’t seen in WoT as of yet.

T-100 Light Tank

This is a Soviet light tank project from 1964. According to the schematic below, the tank weighs about 15 tons and carries a crew of three. Its main armament is a 100mm gun that fire HE, HEAT, and ATGMs. It can go up to a speed of 65 km/h and has an acceleration of 20 hp/t. The upper front plate consist of 100mm + 70mm and the turret front is 180mm. Everywhere else is relatively weak. It can carry 40 regular rounds and 4-6 ATGMs. Like the XM551, I expect to see some ATGMs.

Type 62/105mm L7 Light Tank

This tank should be taken with a large grain of salt. Its possible that this could be a similar situation to the 121B. I haven’t seen anything on the existence of a Type 62 mounting the 105mm L7 with the cast turret. This isn’t a Type 62G since it lacks the welded turret and it’s a very recent modification from the 2000’s. If Kongzhong claims this tank existed before the 80’s we can assuredly say this tank may be another Kongzhong fake. The Chinese didn’t recieve the 105mm L7 until the 1980’s.

      1. I know it might sound too much but why not the M8 light tank? if you mention the possibility of mounting the M68 gun then we have here a vehicle designed for it, it’s armor is weak even against low tier auto-cannons

        1. The reason why the Greyhound might not be added is because its an Armored Car (“Armored”). If anything, they will stick with what they have at lower tiers. I mean, I can see it become a Tier 2 at most.

    1. as I feared it will the the T-54 LT ver. 2.0, a medium with a medium tank gun but with bonus concealment for being a light tank is simply wrong, almost like they are making fun of us
why can’t they simply add the PT-76 and similar vehicles? it’s porbably not because they plan to use it on the amphibious tanks line rumored long ago on a ASAP video, since it seems to have been dropped
the PT-76 would be competitive and they even have more options of similar vehicles like the Obj.906

  1. Why make more stupid T49 style lights?!?!?!? They take most of the hp of a light in one shot!! It’s like having a TD that does 70km/hr!

  2. Yeah bcuz pitching ATGMs that rape modern tanks vs WW2 armor is a good idea. If this ever happens RIP tier 10 “armor” based tanks and anything else below tier 10.

How about you google Konkurs (Cold War era) vs M1A2 Abrams in Yemen? Oh, and also, the two Turkish Leopard 2’s (which we had an article about on this very website) were rekt by the same Cold War era Konkurs.

      1. Yeah, modern MBT’s got lower side armor than front, but thair side armors are much more stronger than the best armored WW2 era tank’s front armor. Oh and also, all tanks in WoT use RHA armor at best while modern tanks use camposite layers + tons active and passive anti missile patterns which still lets them down vs ATGMs.

Even the most early version of ATGMs is going to at least have more than 300mm of armor penetration. Giving such penetration to light tanks is insane and will ruin the game. If this happens, the meta will be bush camping tier 10 LTs that have better camo, view range and mobility than any other tank in game with insane penetration values that will laugh at the most heavily armored tanks of tier 10, let alone lower tiers. Just nope, this will ruin the gameplay.

      2. The most early version of ATGM ever built is the french SS.10 with a penetration power of 400mm against RHA armor and that missile was built in 1955. Even this primitive ATGM is too OP for a light tank in WoT. You might as well just edit all armor values in game to 1\1\1 and save yourself all the trouble.

  3. British FV101 Scoprion
Deployed in action Falklands 1982, First gulf war 1991.
    British FV107 Scimitar
British FV107 mk 2 = new more powerful engine , more armour, better tracks and suspension (same gun).
Deployed in action Falklands 1982, First gulf war 1991, and 2003 Invasion of Iraq, 2002-2014 Afghanistan Operation Herrick
Ajax Scout (SV) = only prototypes built.

  4. Honestly as long as gold ammo exists in the gamr they can add all the shit they want as ammo it wont make a difference.
ATGM must have pretty good pen right ? Well it doesnt matter, tier 8 tanks already have enough pen to go through the front of tier X superheavies if loading gold. So nothing new here.
Eventualy they’ll be like HEAT/HESH except slower, but with massive pen that’s my guess at least. So that wont change anything ; or at least in the current meta. And as WG doesnt seem to want to remove gold well this type of ammo wont really matter.

  5. Why Stingray isn’t chosen instead. I have a feeling WG will just implement a accurate derp gun for XM551, having ATGM will have the same issue as AW with its low tier vehicles, the ATGM is so powerful on stationary targets but completely useless on targets that has enough brain power to move around.

Btw I’m betting KZ will say that Type 62 w/105mm L7 is real, probably claiming it is a proposal upgrade for Type 62 during the late 70s when PRC starts interact with the west. KZ is a company that gives no fucks about historical accuracy or gameplay balance, they just want money. It’s a shame that they got hold the “dealership” of WG’s games.

    1. I doubt this is WG’s masterpiece. As a result of conversation with KZW’s former historians, WG has the case that they modify the information he provides, like 121B.

  6. Bloody hell, according to the schematic of the T-100, the upper plate sould be 500mm effective armor – 170mm at 20 degrees. o.O

What does the german tank get ,,, an interesting turret … this somehow makes it as good.

  7. In fact ,cast turret with 105L7 is true. It’s type 63 ocean improved type。In theory turrets of type 63 and type 62 are interchangeable. But it’s also late.WG give a type 62-1(type 62 Improved model of China Vietnamese war) with 105L7 and It is obvious that the gun can be fitted theoretically.

  8. I’m disappointed with WG’s work.type62 with L7 is too late that it shouldn’t be in WOT.In fact, China can have a historical LT tree.First, let the 132(not wz132) become the LV7 LT. 132 is a stage prototype car of type 62。It produced 28 cars and take part in the parade. It can use 76mm cartridge gun and 85mm gun. Second ,let the WZ131 become the LV8 lt give it 85mm gun with HESH(from the WZ131-1) and 100mm gun . Third, let the mechanical drive WZ132 become Lv9 LT and let the fluid drive WZ132 become the Lv10 LT. This LT tree is better to WG’S Tree and it’s very historical.

  9. Type 62-1 with 105L7 conforms to the tradition of WG that they give a contemporary gun to a tank which does not have a suitable gun, like Tiger、Tiger 2 and IS-4.
