Work on the Coutelas tank destroyer project was started by Hotchkiss around the mid-1950s. The vehicle was designed to meet specific customer requirements: combat weight lower than even noticeably heavier medium-class vehicles, horizontal aiming angles increased up to 60 degrees, a stereoscopic rangefinder, and an anti-aircraft turret.

Captain [Great Britain, HT-8]
Historical Reference:
Even before the start of World War II, the concept of twin-barrel tanks and self-propelled artillery units was repeatedly explored. There were tanks built in metal with two guns capable of firing salvos. Similar work was also carried out in the UK, where the military placed its hopes on the salvo-fire concept.

At the beginning of 1942, during the successful counteroffensive near Moscow, design work on super-heavy tanks was resumed in several Soviet design organizations. One of the proposals was a tank project with the provisional designation KV-90, weighing 90–100 tons, which made extensive use of components and assemblies from serial KV tanks and other vehicles.

Breakthrough super-heavy tanks appeared in the Red Army’s armament system as early as the beginning of the 1930s. The peak of design work occurred in the spring–summer of 1941, but with the outbreak of the Great Patriotic War, the work was once again halted.

KV-4 Mikhailov [USSR, HT-8]

In April 1941, the Council of People’s Commissars of the USSR set the task of designing new super-heavy tanks, with the requirement to produce a prototype by October 1, 1941. Due to the tight deadlines and the high priority of the assignment, the head of SKB-2, Zh. Kotin, was forced to involve almost all engineers of his design bureau in a competitive process.

KV-4 Tseits [USSR, HT-8]
Historical Reference:
After receiving intelligence about the development of super-heavy tanks in Germany weighing around 90 tons, the USSR announced a competition to create a similar vehicle. The authors of successful projects were promised rewards. More than two dozen tank designs were submitted, and the tank received the designation KV-4.
