The jungle, as it turned out, was full of surprises for wildlife enthusiast Tomasz, whose animated reactions to creatures he had never seen in the flesh before greatly amused his crewmates. One morning, as he clambered absent-mindedly onto his tank’s commander’s hatch, he let out a startled shout at the sight of an unusually large lizard sunning itself on the roof. The lizard quickly scrambled away, but Tomasz’s cry of “Jaszczurka! Jakie bydlę!” remained a favorite in-joke of his crew for months thereafter.
