In February-March 1944, the first battles involving IS heavy tanks took place, during which it became clear that the armor protection of the vehicle was insufficient. In March 1944, the first developments of modernization options for these tanks began. One of the options by leading engineer N.F.
Shashmurin assumed moving the fighting compartment to the rear of the hull and modifying the chassis. This version of the project did not last long: in the spring of 1944, Shashmurin was sent to Leningrad to restore the Kirov Plant. For this reason, work on the project stalled.
