Why is it that on the Asian server everything is free XP, while on the EU server everything costs gold?

Because of legal issues in certain countries.
Korea to be precise. And the full reason is that gold has a direct monetary value, while Free XP doesn’t. So the law in Korea treats gambling, auctioning, etc with gold the same as with real money
