Bayern Munich and Vincent Kompany: Results of the New Coach’s Leadership (P)

Bundesliga 2025: How is Bayern coping with the new coach?

On the eve of the new season in German football’s elite, the usual excitement is felt, but the atmosphere in Munich is different. When Vincent Kompany signed a contract with Allianz Arena in May 2024, even fans who enjoy making risky футбольные ставки doubted the correctness of the FCB bosses’ decision.

The still inexperienced coach, who failed to establish himself at Burnley in the English Premier League, was expected to revive the top club that had for the first time in 12 years missed out on the silverware. However, skepticism quickly faded. Under the new leader, who replaced Tuchel, Bayern reclaimed the title two rounds before the end, and the Belgian turned cautious forecasts into an undeniable success.

Meticulous Tactical Redesign

Kompany is building the team on the principles of positional possession, where:

  • Kimmich regularly drops back to the central defenders, forming a 3-2-5 structure;
  • Harry Kane has been given freedom in his actions, dropping deep and pulling center-backs with him, which opens channels for supporting runs from deeper positions;
  • Full-backs, especially Jonathan Tah, have a clear task to shift into the half-spaces during the transition to attack, allowing diamond-shaped formations in the final third and creating chances through quick one-twos.

Additionally, the high press starts immediately after losing possession in the opponent’s third. German analysts calculated that Bayern’s average pressing height has increased to 46 meters, and the number of penetrating passes through the half-spaces has grown by 18% compared to the Tuchel era. This system clearly risks counterattacks, but the sharp accelerations of Davies and Diallo cover the space behind them.

When placing football predictions, analysts increasingly take into account not only Kane’s form but also how Kompany’s system reduces dependence on individual bursts. Bayern now wins not by match heroes but by the architecture of the game.

Numbers That Brought Back the Championship

Only two losses throughout the entire 2024/25 season, 82 points earned, and the best goal difference (+67) made Bayern unreachable for Bundesliga competitors. The team recorded 25 wins, scoring an average of 2.5 goals per game, and the PPDA metric (passes allowed before a defensive action) decreased to 8.9. This is the most aggressive pressing in the league since the Heynckes era. For nine consecutive rounds, the Munich team was not outshot from inside the penalty area, which resulted in an absolute balance between possession and counter-pressure.

Trust of Stars and Fresh Blood

Harry Kane admitted that under Kompany’s leadership, he “finally feels systemic order,” and together with the first trophy, scored 31 accurate shots during the season. This summer, Luis Díaz successfully joined the “stars of the South” roster. His movements from the left flank have already added variability in controlling the second phase of the attack, although the Colombian is still getting used to the German language and the coaching staff’s internal micro-instructions.

The youth players are also active. For example, midfielder Pavlovic doubled his playing time to 9.8 km per match and became fourth in the team for successful interceptions. With such results, no one doubts that Vincent did an excellent job, as clearly evidenced by the bookmakers’ odds for sports betting in matches involving Bayern.
