Additional Description:
On July 14, 1789, hundreds of Parisians stormed and seized the Bastille—a royal prison, the very embodiment of tyranny and oppression, which fell into the hands of ordinary people. While the French Revolution would see days of greater consequence, none were of greater symbolism. The message sent across France that day was clear: the ancien régime’s days were numbered, and hope for change had arrived. In memory of these events, every July 14, France celebrates its Fête nationale, or National Day—better known worldwide as Bastille Day.
