Work on creating the new medium tank Object 407 began at VNII-100 in early 1953. When designing this tank, the engineers were guided by the following main principles: 1. The use of new-type armor protection components that provided improved defensive properties while simultaneously increasing the internal armored volume;
2. Ensuring an increased volume of the fighting compartment by compacting the layout of the tank’s other compartments; 3. Using the most advanced mechanisms with minimal size and weight, as well as the best efficiency coefficients. These mechanisms included the gun loading system, which significantly increased the rate of fire. In the end, due to changing requirements, Object 407 remained only on paper, but based on it, a more advanced tank was developed in 1954 under the designation Object 907.
