In the early 1950s, the Italian military wanted a relatively light and maneuverable medium tank that would not be inferior to the “Patton” tanks. In 1958, a decision was made to participate in the development of the “European Tank” project together with West Germany and France.
As a result, a parallel development of Italy’s own tank, “Gasta,” emerged based on the European project. The hull design of the new tank shows noticeable American influence. The running gear was developed under French influence. Optical systems and the main armament were developed in cooperation with German specialists. Project participants constantly revised the requirements and eventually began developing their own programs, which caused the project to lose its international status. Since the development of “Gasta” could not proceed without the help of partners, the vehicle never advanced beyond the concept stage.
