In Greek, the word “onyx” means “fingernail” or “claw.” According to an ancient Roman myth, Venus, the goddess of love, was asleep when Cupid cut her fingernails with an arrowhead, leaving the clippings scattered on the ground. Since no part of a god’s body can perish, the fates transformed them into stone, which became known as onyx. Believing it granted courage in battle, the Romans carried onyx amulets engraved with the image of Mars, the god of war.
