In the mid-1960s, the Bundeswehr, inspired by the Swedish Strv S, decided to create their own equivalent based on German engineering. In 1966, Krauss-Maffei and Rheinmetall were commissioned to design a turretless tank with a gun fixed rigidly to the hull.
Three years later, Rheinmetall presented a prototype, while Krauss-Maffei withdrew from the competition and focused on the production and modernization of the Leopard 1 tanks.
However, the new vehicle turned out to be very expensive to produce and was only slightly cheaper than the Kpz.70, the main battle tank project that was canceled due to its high cost. Testing continued until 1972, after which the project was discontinued.
