Merkava LP (United Nations, Tier-10, MT, techtree)
The development program for Israel’s main battle tank was approved in August 1970 after it became clear that the United Kingdom would not sell Chieftain tanks to Israel. The tank was named “Merkava”, after the biblical war chariots.
The design team was led by Major General Israel Tal, ensuring that the extensive experience from the Arab-Israeli wars and the geographical conditions of the Middle East were taken into account. Due to a severe shortage of personnel, the focus was placed on protection. The tank’s defense was designed comprehensively: the hull and turret featured spaced armor, and the powertrain was positioned at the front, with the engine and transmission serving as additional protection for the crew.
The first prototype was assembled in 1973 and underwent testing. By late 1974, a pre-production Merkava model was completed, incorporating improvements based on prototype trials. In 1978, the tank was officially unveiled on Independence Day, and the first four production vehicles were delivered to the Israel Defense Forces in 1979.
