After World War II, the US military command requested a new tank to replace the Sherman. The Improved Medium Tank (IMT) was to have strong armor located at rational angles and a low silhouette providing additional protection. It was assumed that the vehicle would weigh no more than 45 tons, and its specific power would be 20 hp/t.
The armament would include a 105 mm cannon with vertical and horizontal stabilization, as well as six machine guns. An optical rangefinder and radar were also planned.
The project was deemed unpromising, but many of the technical developments were used in other American tanks.

And why did they think they needed 6 or so machineguns on that thing?
Cause machine guns on tanks look cool.
The design specifications for this came out mid-1944 without it appears any feedback from front line commanders. US pre-war design all had multitudes of MG every where. It was also have frontal armor of 6-8 inches (preferably 8, King Tiger level protection) and a gun no larger than 76.2mm (3 inches) able to penetrate 8 inches of armor (17 pdr plus penetration).

I didn’t expect a serious answer.
But this at least explains a lot.
Sorry but this round of new tanks (CS-53/56, BZ 74 1, TS-6, IMT etc.) Are super boring and not unique. I want no part of it. If someone finds excitement in them good for them. The last round(6 ish) of tanks spoiled me with all the mechanics and gimmicks.
