Historical Information
During a series of local conflicts, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) consistently replenished their arsenal with captured enemy equipment. One such trophy was the American M47 tanks captured from the Jordanian army. They were not used by the IDF, but the Israeli military considered various options for their modernization. One such modernization option, designated “Romach” (“Spear”), included the removal of the bow machine gun, the installation of improved running gear components and observation devices, as well as the unification of a number of components and assemblies with the M48 “Magach” tank, which was in service with the IDF. As a result, the M47 “Romach” tank was not embodied in metal and remained on paper. The reason for this was the small number of captured vehicles, as well as the presence in the IDF of more advanced M48 “Magach” tanks.
