WoT: Update 1.20.1 – Crew Improvements


After the announcement of previous changes and based on the Common Tests results where we suggested our changes to the crew perk system, we received many questions and comments from you. Many of you shared your feedback about potential issues with the new system. We would like to thank all active players again for taking part in the future of World of Tanks. Your feedback is what helps us work out different ideas and understand which direction development should take.

In Update 1.20.1, the Crew Perk System Will Remain Unchanged

The results of the first Common Tests clearly showed us that the suggested changes to the crew perk system required serious improvements. We took into account the point that this new system will increase the skill gap between newcomers and World of Tanks veterans with experienced crews.

As a result, at this stage, we have decided to keep the current crew perk system without changing familiar mechanics. We won’t add new perks or rework existing ones in Update 1.20.1.

No action will be required from you with regard to the crew perk system after Update 1.20.1. You won’t need to train new perks, adapt to reworked ones, or retrain your crews—in the upcoming update, all current mechanics will remain unchanged. For example, Firefighting will still be available for the crew members of all major qualifications.

However, those improvements that will help make the entire system more comfortable and useful will be released in Update 1.20.1. We will also continue working on updating the crew perk system, taking into account your feedback and data gathered during Common Tests. We will need time to address the issues with more complex aspects of this feature.

For now, here’s a summary of the crew improvements that will be released in Update 1.20.1.

Perk Training and Major Qualification Level

There will no longer be skills in the updated system—they will become perks. In the new system, all perks become active immediately once you start training them, even when trained to 1%. At first, their effect will be minimal, but the more you train a perk, the more its effectiveness increases. The same applies to Brothers in Arms—even if only one crew member has the perk trained, the entire crew will reap the advantages of the bonus.

The Mentor perk has become more convenient: Its effect now also works for the Commander.

Additionally, the major qualification level now affects almost all perks (excluding Brothers in Arms). The higher it is, the stronger the perk effect.

Combat Interface for Perks With Situational Effects

When updating the crew perk system, we tried to make it not only more comfortable to use but also more informative. To do so, we added separate icons to the combat interface to display perks with a situational effect.

The situational effect triggers and provides a bonus only when the conditions to activate the effect are met in battle. For example, some perks with such an effect are Adrenaline Rush (accelerates gun loading if the vehicle has under 10% of its hit points left) and Jack of All Trades (enables the Commander to replace knocked-out crew members).

Each time the effect activates, the corresponding perk icon will appear on the combat interface. This way, you’ll see right away that the perk has triggered. You can enable and disable the display of perk icons in the game settings.

Interface Rework: Clearer and More Informative

To make the crew perk system even more informative, we’ve also reworked some in-game interfaces.

  • In the characteristics window of any vehicle in your Garage, you’ll see how all current perks affect these characteristics. Now you will be able to understand more clearly how particular perks improve your vehicles.

  • Perk descriptions and pop-up tooltips in the Garage, as well as descriptions of the directives for crew, have been reworked to become clearer and more informative.

Finally, an enjoyable bonus: There will no longer be a penalty to the earned Crew XP if you finish a battle with injured crew members.

  1. Yeah well there you go, the games development is going so fucking slow because of bad decision making on Wargamings side and even worse communicating on the communities side.

    Every new aspect they present about this sends the community in to fit of rage and it all just goes to shit. Some of the skills just needed a little bit of extra balancing, and then they needed to remove the perks scaling with major crew qualification but the rest was absolutely fine but now we wont get any of it because of retards like Quickybaby and the asian monkey that roams this webbsite.

    This has taken 3 fucking years and we are basically getting a little micropatch with some QOL changes.

    1. So long as those in the community who talk will be the warriors who either have their way, or nobody is allowed to enjoy the game, then expect updates to happen like this.

    2. I agree with your take on the crew completely. The major thing that needed to be removed was the skill scaling with qualification, because that made each skill too strong, and increased the difference between, for example, a 4 skill and 5 skill crew much bigger. Other than that, some skills just needed slight tweaking and everything would be fine. Its definitely partly the fault of WG for not seeing how bad the major qualifications scaling would be, but also the community was so unhelpful, calling the entire system bad, not pointing out what was really bad about it. WG did what they had to, and scrapped most of it for further development, but if we were better as a community, this really could have gone in in a balanced state. WG delivered on their end, we failed to do so on ours

    3. you know if they made exp easier to get and made it so the crew skills if it only had 2 or 3 crew on a tank …it be counted as double if on a tank.. it would have gone through no problem.. crew on mantcore or elc gets x2 exp to crew training .. or any that only has 2 to 3 crew on a tank.. if currently on a tank the crew skills get doubled so if it had 4 it gets 8.. that alone would have made it get pushed through.. including 3 month to a year of all crews having the option to reset them selves for free.. wg just messed up cause dont play your own game…

    4. We dont need to buff tanks and crews any more we already have turbo matches
      some perks were straight up buff like engineer.
      QOL changes and some rebalance was enough

  2. Agree totally. Just needs skill tweak, few new skills and other changes and would have been fine.
    Because QB started crying and ranting because he wouldn’t have his 8 skill advantage in one tank the whole thing has been trashed.
    No new modes, no new crews, no new maps. This game is so stagnant.

    1. Seems that WG is pretty sensitive to CC rants. In World of Warships we also had some stuff nerfed because a toxic nerd (Flamu, Finnish streamer and former CC) disliked it and kept ranting about it until he got what he wanted.

  3. WG did this to themselves. The CCs did raise some valid concerns even if they were exaggerated. WG should have broken this patch into sections for better testing and feedback.

    I hope WG will milk the fuck out of them with all their Black market shits.
    Luckily, there are people who know what is going on and they’re popular enough to have their voices being heard so those who truly love the game and want it to be better like me don’t have to suffer from WG’s greediness.

      That was the whole point of that Crew Rework.
      And there are these brainless or braindead people here talking about the update getting cancelled because of some CCs and not the whole fcking community.
      They are truly special and there’s absolutely nothing you can do =))))
      For them, it’s like WG will delete the whole fcking system that they create to encourage Pay to Win in this game and never attempt to re-implement it.
      Meanwhile, WG literally said in the article that they will keep on developing Crew Rework.
      At this point, I shouldn’t be reading this any comment on this site because it make me want to bash these braindead clueless pigeons so much and it’s such a waste of time.

        And ofcourse they will continue with the crew rework just as they have said, it will come in 3 stages. But the crew SKILLS are completly scrapped.

        1. Comparisons like that doesn’t mean anything.
          Comparison should be 2 players with the same level of skill, one is an avg player with 5-skill crew and the other is a p2w player with 8-skill crew, both in the same tank.
          Guess what? With the current crew system, it doesn’t matter because 5-skill crew and 8-skill crew are not much different.
          But with the Crew Rework, oh boy it’s only 12 more useful skills.
          Some special people pretend they don’t know the fact that WG doesn’t make a hard cap for the number of skill per crew member just to make the game become 10x more P2W.
          Btw, 60% players aren’t god. We’re just more experienced or should I say more dedicated.

  5. I encourage all of you to make a new account with no premium. Play through to tier 8 and tell the world how fun it is facing tier 2 – 5 seal clubbers with a shit crew and no field mods no bounty equipment ect….

  7. You guys are living jokes, all crying about the new crew system being reworked first then all crying because the potential extra buff or super dipping of your tank crews is gone.
    That update was full blast shit but for one catégorie, no life sweety geeks with enough games that are the same that go sealclubbing in low tiers and do stat padding.
    I have 30 table with crews at 5 to 6 skills after 55k games and I would have been well served but the update yet I can see the effect also on my lights but on new comers and friends I that joined me recently and that would have been utter shit….
    So learn how to play instead of seal clubbing noobs in low tiers, monkeys
