Duan-wu or Duanwu (Chinese 端午), also called “double five”, as it falls on the fifth day of the fifth month of the lunar calendar, is a Chinese traditional holiday of the calendar cycle that falls at the beginning of summer. Its name is usually translated as a festival of dragon boats, according to the most common ritual and entertainment event on this day – a rowing competition in boats depicting dragons. On this day, it is customary to eat zongzi.
Duan-wu has its parallels in the cultures of other Asian countries: Kodomo no hi, originally, in exact accordance with the lunar calendar – Tango no sekku (Jap. 端午の節句), – in Japan, Dano (Dano, Surit-nal) – in Korea, Doanngo (Tết Đoan Ngọ) – in Vietnam.
