Romanian Tech Tree in World of Tanks • 2021 proposal • Part 3 • by davidblader

Please read part 1 and 2 if you haven’t already.

Hello, community!

I am davidblader and welcome to part 3 of the Romanian tech tree! Thanks for your positive feedback on parts 1 and 2, as well as for your criticism. 🙂

New tech tree design, click here for full quality

As you can see, I’ve made a new tech tree design based on the official Wargaming model. I’ve also made Wargaming-style images showing the vehicles’ researchable modules (see below).

The new tech tree design shows the best version of the Romanian tree (‘’version 3.0’’, as I’ve called it – I used different versions in parts 1 and 2), which includes the mixed light-medium-heavy branch.

Part 3 – introduction

In part 3, I am first going to show you an overview of the tech tree, while I discuss what potential I believe Romania has to get added to World of Tanks.

After that, I am going to show you the researchable modules of every vehicle.

I will continue by showing you what the Romanian emblems, colors, consumables, inscriptions and camouflages would look like in the game.

Let’s start now, shall we? 😉

Romania’s potential

The possible future nation with the highest potential is surely Switzerland, since they can have up to 8 branches and have lots of unique vehicles. Romania has a smaller tech tree, but is definitely not behind when it comes to new unique content. I’d say Romania has the second biggest potential after the Swiss, but that’s just my opinion, so no need to spam the comments with what nation should come next. Click here to see Mizutayio’s interactive Swiss tech tree.

The Romanian tree doesn’t have any (big) issues; it fulfills pretty much every requirement needed for a tech tree to exist: tier 8 premiums are available; tier 8-10 tanks are similar in gameplay; all tanks fit timeframe-wise and technology-wise; there are no clones or fakes.

As we all know, Wargaming wants to add content that is unique in terms of playstyle, right? That’s why they’ve been adding a lot of new gameplay systems, like the Italian autoreloader, the Polish turbo-mode and the Soviet double-barrel tanks.

The problem is that most of those additions are made up and are affecting WoT’s historical accuracy. The Romanian tech tree would be a good possibility to add something new to the game that is both unique in playstyle and historically accurate.

For example, Romania would bring with it the TAA (tier 10 TD), which, as mentioned in part 1, would be something completely new, like the game has never seen before. It would have a completely new playstyle as well as a completely new design, with its extremely narrow turret and its autoloader.

Above you can see screenshots of Giganaut’s TAA 3D model.

Obviously, the TAA would be the Romanian tech tree’s highlight, but there are many other unique things as well, in both the TD line and the LT-MT-HT line. For example, the Mareșal tank destroyers (tiers 5, 6 and 7).

I’ve made an approximate size comparison of the Hetzer and the Mareșal M-04 (tier 5), using their dimension stats from the internet (note that I’ve used the Mareșal M-05’s dimensions – the M-04 is even smaller, as shown in my illustration above; it should probably be a bit longer, though).

The Mareșal, which is also a historically important vehicle, would be even shorter than the AMX ELC bis. Meme tanks are something the Romanian tree has plenty of. 🙂Above is a newly-surfaced photo of the M-04 prototype (a wooden mock-up of it, seemingly) that I’ve found just a few days ago. This shows that new information keeps being found, which could improve and enlarge the Romanian tech tree. The photo is from Arhivele Naționale Istorice Centrale and was sent to me by author Alexandru V. Ștefănescu. Click here to view it in full quality.

Silhouette of the TR-77-800 (I had called it ”TR-800” part 2)

Top tier heavies would also have a somewhat new gameplay, as they have a low alpha damage (320-400), which isn’t typical for high tier HTs. They could get a faster rounds-per-minute stat. Design-wise, they combine features of Western and Soviet tanks, which also applies to their playstyle; it would be a combination of British and Soviet playstyles, as they get good armor, decent speed, low gun depression, low alpha damage, high penetration, fast reload time, probably bad accuracy.

Researchable modules

You can click on each image for full quality. If it doesn’t work, click here to see them all.

Some historical accuracy notes:

  • information on radios was very sparse. I haven’t found too much info on what radios were used on Romanian tanks specifically, so I’ve given them radios based on historical possibilities and based on comparable radios tier-for-tier in the game. For example, the TACAM T-60 (tier 3 TD) is based on the T-60’s chassis, so its stock radio is the T-60’s tier 3 71-TK-3, while the upgraded radio is the German tier 8 FuG 8, also found on the Marder II, because Germany and Romania were allied during WW2.

  • same goes for few of the engines, but I mostly didn’t have problems when researching them.

The TACAM T-60’s top guns are marked with a red star because they’d only be used if the vehicle becomes the tier 4 standard TD. Any specific questions will be answered in the comments.

Tank destroyer branch

Light-medium-heavy branch

The two branches could both be split into three mini-branches that are similar in terms of both playstyle and design. That’s good, since it shows there’s a homogeneity in the Romanian tree; you always get prepared for the next vehicle’s gameplay. For example, the tier 8s prepare you for tiers 9 and 10, due to the gameplay similarity.

In the TD branch, you first get the TACAMs (tiers 2-4), which are Marder-like TDs with open casemates. Then you have the Mareșals (tiers 5-7), which are very small, have closed-in casemates and derp gun options. Later you get the high tiers (8-10), which are mobile rear-turreted TDs. The pretty much universal feature of Romanian TDs is that they have paper armor in exchange for strong guns and good mobility.

In the LT-MT-HT branch, you first have tiers 2-5: they don’t have the best armor, but mostly have decent mobility (except for the tier 3) and good gun depression values. At tiers 6-7 you have the C.L.T. 34-120 and C.L.T. 34-150 which both have derp guns and very similar designs, basically the Romanian equivalents of the Finnish BT-42; slower, but with more armor. The tier 7 would have a ”heavium” (heavy-medium) playstyle, which would be good, as it could be a transition vehicle between the tier 6 medium and the tier 8 heavy, despite not being the most similar in playstyle to the tier 8. At tiers 8-10 you get the TR heavy tanks, which have good armor, decent speed (50 km/h), low gun depression (-5°) and 320-400 alpha damage guns.

Colors

From what I’ve found, most Romanian WW2 tanks were painted in a khaki-drab green tone. German tanks in Romanian service seem to have been kept in their yellowish-brown color (Panzer dunkelgelb)

Cold War tanks seem to have used some sort of grey or greyish green, but also dark green. Modern ones are sometimes also seen in a dark grey tone.

Emblems

There are three possible emblems I’d propose for Romanian tanks.
The Romanian roundel, similar to the French one, seems to have been used before WW2 and then again in the Cold War and the modern period.

The white version of King Michael’s cross was mostly used during WW2, like on these TACAM T-60 and R-2 tanks:

The blue stripe is an interesting one; I’d mostly like to see this one in the game, since it’s different from any other kind of emblem/marking currently in WoT. According to one source, though, it wasn’t used on every vehicle, but only on those of the sub-unit’s commander.

Romanian TAs (StuG III G) with blue stripe. Source: worldwar2.roRomanian Renault R35s with blue stripes

There are two more emblems, but I wouldn’t add them. One is the colored version of King Michael’s cross, which was painted on roofs of tanks for aerial identification. The other one is a star within a circle, used after the 1944 Royal Coup d’état:

For historical value purposes, I’d like it if tiers 1-7 (WW2 tanks) would be painted khaki and use the King Michael’s cross, while the high tier Cold War tanks would be dark green with the Romanian roundel. Germany and China also use multiple emblems/colors for historical accuracy. If this wouldn’t be possible, I’d prefer to see them all in dark green with either the Romanian roundel or the blue stripe. A nice combination would also be dark grey with the blue stripe, like you see on that TACAM R-2 in the picture above.

Consumables

There are obviously many possible consumables. I’ve thought of cozonac, which is a traditional Romanian desert:

Inscriptions

Here are some possible Romanian inscriptions I’ve thought of:

  • Mareșal (”marshal”) or Mareșalul (”the marshal”) – reference to the Mareșal tank destroyer
  • Vânătorul (”the hunter”) – kind of a reference to the tier 3 VDC R35 (Vânătorul de care R35)
  • Mărășești – city in Romania. The inscription is a reference to the WW1 Battle of Mărășești, where the Romanians had defeated the Germans and Austro-Hungarians, which made the city well-known.
  • Pe aici nu se trece! (”no one shall pass through here!”, roughly) – famous Romanian quote, having its origins in the aforementioned battle and other battles. Would also be cool to have this as one of the commander’s lines when you destroy an enemy vehicle.
  • Transilvania (”Transylvania”) – historical region in western Romania, famous for being associated with Dracula (meme stuff).
  • Valahia (”Wallachia”) – historical region in southern Romania, known for its ruler Vlad the Impaler, on whom Dracula was based (more meme stuff).
  • Moldova (”Moldavia”) – historical region in eastern Romania, not to be confused with the Republic of Moldova, which was once also part of Romania
  • Bran – reference to the Bran Castle, also known as Dracula’s Castle (even more meme stuff).
  • Lupul (’’the wolf’’) – Romania has one of the biggest wolf populations in Europe
  • Linx (”lynx”) – the national animal of Romania
  • Carpații și frații (“the Carpathians and the brothers”) – quote from a patriotic song. The Carpathians are a mountain chain in Romania, while ‘’the brothers’’ refers to the resistance the Romanians would oppose from the mountains in case the country goes at war.

Camouflages

Winter camo

Another winter-camouflaged R-2 or R-2c

Summer camo

Camouflaged TR-77-580, probably in the 80s. A pretty late camo, but still possible – doesn’t look similar to any in-game camo I can think of.

Illustration of a Romanian Panzer IV from the aforementioned book. The camo looks similar to the German one – it probably was German. I’d prefer the more original camo seen on the TR-77-580 above.

Desert camo

Romanian forces never fought in desert areas, but I’ve unexpectedly managed to find two camo possibilities. The first one is this:

It’s a Romanian Panzer IV, seeming to be painted in the German Panzer dunkelgelb (dark yellow), with green summer camo on the turret. This green-yellowish combination actually makes it look similar to some desert camos we see in the game, so it would theoretically work.

The other one, which comes as a surprise, is actually an Iraqi camo. That’s because Iraq used Romanian TR-77-580s. Not a Romanian camo, but used on a Romanian tank, so it might work.

tanks-encyclopedia.com reconstruction of a TR-77-580 with Iraqi camo/markings.

Crew lines

Romanian crews would have to say some crazy funny shit, right?
There is a Romanian crew voice mod called ”Romanians inside”, which includes lines like „The gunner is hurt, give him two kicks in the ass, maybe he’ll get well”.
Would be epic to hear such lines in the game. :)))))))

New map?

As you probably know, the Polish Studzianki map got added along with the Polish tech tree. If Romania gets added to WoT, there are also possible Romanian maps that can be included.

One of them is Transylvania, which was split between Romania and Hungary during WW2 and saw tank combat between Romania, which was now an Allied nation as a result of the 1944 Royal Coup d’état, and the Axis. I imagine it as an open-field map with a village, possibly mountains and a river.

Another possible map would be the Jassy-Kishinev line, named after the cities of Iași (Jassy) and Chișinău (Kishinev). Tank battles were fought there, while Romania was still part of the Axis, including those of ace tanker Ion S. Dumitru, who has a medal named after him in WoT. I’d also imagine it as an open-field map.

A third option would be Bucharest, which I’d add as a half-city, half-field map.

Skins

The Romanian army had used several foreign vehicles during World War II.

At first, while part of the Axis, Romania had used many German vehicles like Panzer IIIs, Panzer IVs and StuG III Gs.

Several captured Soviet tanks, like T-60, T-26 and T-34 were also used, along with American/British tanks used by the Soviets and captured by the Romanians, such as M3 Lees and Valentines.

After the 1944 Royal Coup d’état, which made Romania defect from the Axis, multiple Axis vehicles were also captured (including Hetzers and Tiger Is).

Obviously, those foreign vehicles wouldn’t be added to the Romanian tech tree, since they’d be clones. Instead, I’d like to see them as historical skin options on vehicles from other tech trees. For example, I really like the way the Romanian TAs (StuG III G) looks, in its yellow-brownish color, combined with the blue Romanian markings. Maybe the in-game name of the vehicle could also be changed if you have the skin activated. So, in battle, you wouldn’t see the vehicle called ”StuG III G”, but ”TAs”. Other vehicles would also have changed names, like the Panzer III (T-3) and Panzer IV (T-4).

Romanian TAs

If this feature gets added, it could, of course, also be applied to other nations apart from Romania. It would be nice to see, say Panzer IVs, with Romanian/Italian/Soviet-captured colors and markings. Such a feature would also improve the game’s historical accuracy.

Thanks for your support!

This is the end of part 3, most likely the last part of the Romanian tech tree. Thank you all for reading to the end.

Also, thanks again for your positive messages and support on parts 1 and 2. I am waiting to read your feedback and criticism on part 3 as well. 🙂

      1. Actually is NOT much at all

Interesting read, this much data must be catching some attention from WG

  1. Fantastic ! I would love to see the Maresals in WOT.. Unfortunately, I think WG will prefer to push their own agenda with more EBR’s and Objects.

  2. I love this. The only problems I see with this is WG and their lack of interest in implementing anything below tier VIII, because they are fixated on their current monetisation scheme/scam and have lost all interest in a broader variety of nations, and low tier and real tanks.

so much for the “World” of Tanks. what a joke of false advertising.

But it’s good to see people like davidblader putting in all their love for tanks and effort to create this. much appreciated.

    1. Thanks very much for your kind words! 🙂
I guess you’re right about WG’s lack of interest for anything below tier 7/8, but since the Swiss tree is pretty much confirmed to come at some point, I guess they have no choice but to add low tiers as well.

If, let’s say, they add Romania, it would be a shame to add a full MT/HT branch and only add TDs starting from tier 7/8. Tier 2-6 TDs are of historical value, I’d like to play them.

      1. I’d definitely play them too.
Hope you’ll find a way to get a foot in the door at WG and get them to consider your proposal. It may take a few years until we see results, but keep at it. We definitely need more active passionate people in the tank (and tank gaming) community.

        1. Glad to hear that, Sturmi. Wargaming are going to get contacted about this, don’t worry 😉
They most likely know of the proposal already, since they read TAP.

  3. Thank you Davidblader for your efforts to create this very interesting and much appreciated new branch of Romanian tanks.
Your work is extraordinary. It seems to me and others that with people of your talent and as passionate as you WoT could last for many years outside of this greedy society of wargaming …

    1. Wow, thanks for your kind words Kohai! It’s highly appreciated! 🙂
Let’s hope for the best, I guess.

  4. Looks awesome, and def some unique tanks. Any idea as to what marks of excellence design would be implemented for the Romanian vehicles?

    1. Thanks, I appreciate it! 🙂
I’ve looked up Romanian gun markings, but haven’t found anything. I don’t think Romanian crews did this, neither did crews of many other nations currently in the game.
Since Romania and Germany were allied, the tanks could get German markings, but different from the ones we see in the game. The Czechoslovaks, for example, also have a version of German markings. I’d suggest Romania to get the same ones as Czechoslovakia, but maybe with only one stripe per mark of excellence, instead of two.

      1. Alternatively (I’ve just thought of this), if Romanian tanks get implemented with the blue stripe as their emblem, the gun markings might also be blue stripes to fit with the looks. Would be pretty unique 🙂

  5. Hi david
Im romanian too I read your preceding posts and I really like what youre trying to do and want to apreciate on behalf of all romanians but i feel like it is not enough.
We have to face the truth, our tank destroyers would be soviet tanks slapped with a large gun or howitzer. except the mareşal but it is forced to a tier it doesnt belong, i wouldnt want to ever play in it against a t29 or is2 even with a 150mm tun. The mediums(or as you clasified tr77 heavy), half of them didnt even reach a planning stage and no drawings were made. they were only sugestions but they were imediately rejected cuz our bad engineering and manufacturing ability. The truth is they are simply ceh and soviet tank with the mildest diferences if there were any. We never had enough tanks to have a full techtree like swizerland or ungaria and it wont be diferent in the future eihter.. 🙁
    Thank u anyway

    1. Hey, Ion.
I’m pretty sure that none of the Romanian TDs are Russian tanks, the TACAMs and high tiers are original designs (just like the Maresal that you’ve already mentioned). The OAPR 89 is the only one which is based on a Soviet design, but one that isn’t even in the game. It’s a hybrid of a Romanian and a Soviet vehicle, there’s absolutely no way to call it unoriginal in terms of WoT.

The mediums/heavies are (like I said in my previous points) not as original as the TDs, but still original enough to be added. They aren’t “foreign designs with the mildest differences”. Look at the tier 6 and 7, for example. They’re based on a (modified!) T-34 hull, but have completely different guns and turrets, which makes them extremely different in both playstyle and visually. Absolutely no way to call them T-34 clones. It would be like calling the Hetzer a LT vz. 38 clone.

The high tier heavies (TR-77s) would actually be unique in playstyle, as they are in design. Like I said in part 2, they combine Western and Soviet design features, and same goes for the gameplay: They would pretty much be combinations of British and Soviet tanks. They’re the only top tier heavies with 100 mm guns, which would give them a low alpha damage, but fast reloading speed, making them similar to British tanks in this matter. They’d also have high pen values like the Brits. But they get good top speeds and good armor, like the Soviets, and have low gun depression. It’s a combination of different nations’ playstyle which makes them unique.

By the way, in WoT, it doesn’t matter whether a tank was produced or just proposed. Over half of the game’s tanks are drawings or prototypes, which doesn’t mean they’re less historical.

And like I said, there are plenty or Romanian tanks still unknown, as the archives haven’t been researched properly. After more research is done, I’m sure the tree can be extended and improved.

  6. This must happen! We, the Romanians, have the right to be proud!

  7. Good work and thanks for posting these. As I now finally have an idea on how I want to present my in-def articles on the Czechoslovakian Tech Rework. (I was thinking of doing the same thing but I just didn’t know how In-def I should go.)

And it’s good thing I waited too. As I have a lot of questions and suggestions. Most of these are based on the proposal I made awhile ago here. https://imgur.com/a/wQts6ih

Well I’ll start with the first and obvious one. What happened to CEGA/IND tank? was there just not enough info to be found or was it all a fabrication? since it seems you want to stick to implementing real vehicles into the game. (I really liked the story behind that one.) Or is the TR-77-800 this mysterious tank all along. You should keep it as Weegee loves having proposals for clan/mission tanks. Also a Leopard 1 with a TR-85 turret with 200mm of upper plate armor sounds like fun.

Another thing I want to ask is… Did you ever considered using the anti-tanks guns that Romania used while allied to Nazi Germany and was under Soviet occupation?

Because I found out that guns like the 100mm M1944 (BS-3) and the 10 cm K17. (there is also the 85mm D-48 anti-tank gun but I can’t find anymore info on this gun beyond it being exported to Romania) While these guns were not used on tanks, It would be a good alternative to the Large caliber howitzers found on the Maresals and the T-34s. The K17 is WWI era gun and it’s AP shells would only have around 120mm to 150mm of pen good for the T-34s at tier 6 and 7. And the M1944 is essentially a D-10 in-game so it would have 175mm of pen, good for the tier 6 and 7 Maresals.

Also maybe you should consider the M1977 for use as well. It can be given the same pen as the LB-1 in game of 190mm of pen on it’s standard round would be a good top gun for the tier 8 heavy.

That picture of the Maresal. It looks like it’s armed with a 10.5 cm Gebirgshaubitze 40 howitzer. a gun that was used by various countries after WWII. I’m not so sure if this gun was used by Romania but the gun was developed to be used in the Balkans and Alps so it would make sense that this gun would fall into Romanian hands.

And the final question I had. (more of a suggestion.) Is it possible that the MLI 100 tank destroyer might actually have started as a casemate tank destroyer? I have no evidence and it’s more of a hunch.

Since the TRs used the T-54 tank as a base. I wondered if they might have based the TAA project in it’s infancy on a Soviet tank destroyer as well. Like basing it on the SU-100 or ASU-85. This is just me being sad that the ASU-85 is still not in-game and honestly TDs like the E25 are to blame. plus it feels to be a good way to transition the line from low silhouette case mate TD’s to the autoloading TD’s at the higher tiers of 9 and 10.

Still good work and thanks for putting these articles out. now I have an idea now on what to do. If I find the time that is. being a frontline worker during this pandemic has been tough.

P.S. Having cyan line gun markers looks nice, it’ll defiantly be unique to look at in-game.

    1. Thank you Purelycycle!

The Cega/Ind I would currently not add to the tree, since it’s too unknown. If more info gets found, it can probably be added, in case it’s an original design.

I haven’t considered using unhistorical guns on tanks, since like I said, I want to keep my tree as historical as possible. Obviously such guns would bring more diversity, but I think my tree is already diverse enough as I propose it now. 🙂

The Maresals seen in picture use either the 75 mm Resita M1943 gun or the 122 mm M-30 howitzer with a muzzle brake attached to it.

It’s very unlikely that the MLI-100 was considered to be a casemate TD. Seeing as it’s part of the same project as the TAA, they most likely look very similar.

The TRs weren’t based on the T-54. I don’t know whether there ever was a project to combine the TAA and TRs, haven’t found anything like that.

So from what I’ve seen, that Romanian tech tree of yours includes many tanks that never existed. But who knows, after the archives get researched, maybe we’ll find out that some of this speculation is actually true 😀 (are you gonna make an article on it?)

Anyway, thanks for your support and I’m glad to hear I inspired you, I’m looking forward to reading your articles on the extended Czechoslovak tree. 🙂

      1. Most of the vehicles on my Tech Trees are fakes based on ideas of taking existing components and vehicles and putting them together. Similar to the Italian and Polish medium tanks in-game.

The TR-77-TAA is literally just a TR-77-580 hull and chassis modified to take the TAA’s turret and inner layout. The TR-74 concept was based on the Initial ideas of the TR tank project. Basically a TR-77 with a welded turret similar in design to the the Panther or Tiger II. The T-34 Modificares are similar to yours as well in design. And the T-34/T-4 is also just a T-34 hull with a Panzer 4 ausf. G turret.

I was going to draw these vehicles as well as others but after what Wargaming had said about the Swiss and Hungarian Tech Trees I dropped everything and moved on. And when I made these Tech Trees, I had to make sure I followed Weegee’s design philosophies on how they want to implement content. Reality had to take a back seat. But it’s good that your sticking to historical accuracy, as I was forced to throw my humanity away.

Anyways If any ones interested here’s a sneak peak of what may come soon. just got to finish up some of the images, put part 2 together and it’ll be done. https://imgur.com/a/C2eaSuo

        1. Is there anything historical behind that “TR-77 with a Panther/Tiger turret”? Never heard of it as being an initial idea of the TR project. Btw, what have WG said about the Swiss and Hungarians? And when did they say it?

          1. No… It was an idea that I came up with during my research. The idea that maybe both a welded and a cast turret were designed, but the cast was chosen in favor. This is not what really happened but knowing WeeGee, it’s enough for them to green light it

But as for what Wargaming said. They basically said that Switzerland and Hungary had no Interesting vehicles to add to the game. and that there will be no more new Tech Trees. as there are no more tanks left that could be implemented. (It didn’t help either when they debuted the Polish mediums a year later, and that the tier 10 would have a turbine engine. And Switzerland had actually modified a Panzer 68 with a turbine engine that worked. I was mad and still am that they said that and did that.)

And as to who, my finger points at Makarov and someone else who I can’t remember. I think it was 2019 at the start of that year they said that.

            1. Switzerland definitely has interesting vehicles, Idk why they’d say something like that. And so does Romania. Since WG have leaked that the Swiss are coming at some point, I suppose they’ve changed their opinion.

            2. @Purelycycle btw, from what phdr_vrba has said, the upcoming CZSK heavies are fake. Is that true? From what I remember, SilentStalker actually said that a CZSK HT line would be possible

              1. That wasn’t a hint that the Swiss and Hungarians are coming, it was a demonstration image they showed when they mentioned the European tech tree that had then been cancelled. That’s why they had also shown the flags of Czechoslovakia, Italy and Poland in the same frame.

  8. Very, very nice job. Well done Blade.
It seems indeed an original line, WG should pay attention and implement it. We players will have pleasure in playing those tanks.

    1. Many thanks, glad to hear you like it 🙂
Let’s hope WG will take it into consideration.
