The Israeli main battle tank development program was approved in August 1970, after it became clear that the United Kingdom would not sell Israel the “Chieftain” tanks. The tank was named “Merkava” — a term referring to biblical combat chariots. The development team was led by General Israel Tal, whose extensive experience from the Arab-Israeli wars and the geographical characteristics of the Middle East significantly influenced the design.

Historical Reference

After the end of World War I, the French command considered the concept of a heavy tank designed to strengthen the Maginot Line. In May 1936, the task of designing the project was assigned to AMX, ARL, and FCM companies. AMX developed the project for a super-heavy tank under the name Tracteur C based on the combat experience of World War I.
